What You Will Do

As GFT continues to grow and expand, we are seeking an emerging Roadway Project Engineer to support our Transportation Group in Metro Nashville, TN. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of 3 days of onsite office attendance. Working on the roadway team at GFT offers the opportunity to engage in transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity. What You’ll Be Challenged To Do

As a Roadway Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and development of roadway and highway projects across Tennessee and the Southeast. You’ll support project delivery for state, municipal, and private clients while working under the guidance of senior engineers and project managers. In this role, you’ll take ownership of design tasks, prepare plans and technical documentation, and support project management activities to meet our high standards for delivering projects on time, within scope and in alignment with established quality expectations. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, and continue developing your technical expertise and client‑facing skills within the transportation infrastructure sector.

Responsibilities
  • Perform engineering design tasks for roadway projects from concept development to final design, including construction support.
  • Develop plans, specifications, cost estimates, reports, and prepare final bid packages.
  • Establish working relationships and contact with client technical staff and project managers.
  • Assist in the recruitment and mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subconsultants, and client managers.
  • Coordinate planning, staffing, scheduling, budget management, and quality control of subconsultants and internal technical and support staff.
  • Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost and scheduling performance.
  • Lead projects and complete tasks within schedule and budget with teams comprised of different disciplines.
  • Perform project QA/QC.
  • Assist project managers with various tasks.
  • Multi-task and manage workload on various projects simultaneously.
  • Undertake tasks efficiently and independently.
  • Participate in proposal development as part of a pursuit team.
  • Support GFT efforts to grow our Transportation Practice in Tennessee.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Tennessee, or the ability to obtain a license within 3 months; additional state licensure is a plus.
  • 8-10 years of progressive engineering experience with broad knowledge of transportation design and strong technical skills in highway design.
  • Prior experience with Tennessee Department of Transportation projects preferred, and well versed in client design policies, standards, and specifications.
  • Proficient in MicroStation, OpenRoads and Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, self-starter, demonstrated organization skills, team player, and willingness to learn.
Compensation

The salary range for this role is $115,000 – $140,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
