Job summary

The City of Charlotte's Transportation Department seeks a Supervisory Labor Crew Chief to oversee a large field crew handling roadway maintenance and repair, with hands-on operation of heavy equipment and daily reporting.

Responsibilities include coordinating work, ensuring safety and OSHA compliance, training staff, setting grade stakes, and communicating with the public about projects. A valid Class A CDL and supervisory experience are required.

Qualifications

• High School/GED required.
• Knowledge of transportation principles and roadway construction practices.
• Experience in supervision and coordination of crews preferred.

Responsibilities

• Supervises/Participates in large-scale field operations that include maintenance and repair.
• Directs equipment and crew including heavy equipment and trucks.
• Prepares estimates of time and materials by computing quantities.
• Maintains equipment in daily operation.
• Ensures work is completed on schedule and to standards.
• Directs transportation services to ensure proper use of materials.
• Sets grade from stakes and cut sheets.
• Resolves worker problems and supports issue resolution.
• Ensures safety rules and OSHA regulations are followed.
• Loads/unloads materials and equipment as needed.
• Operates vehicles, hand tools, and power-operated equipment.
• Creates daily reports for Cityworks.
• Communicates with the public about projects.
• Trains and develops employees.
• Evaluates performance and prepares appraisals.
• Occasionally on-call for one-week periods.
