This position performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as maintenance contract and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties for a Roadway Maintenance Tech II or III include:
- Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Additional responsibilities for a Roadway Maintenance Tech III include:
- Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Roadway Maintenance Tech II (General Transportation Tech II):
1 YEAR* transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
Roadway Maintenance Tech III (General Transportation Tech III):
2 YEARS* transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
- (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 365 calendar days from date of employment.
Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 365 days of employment. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/military-skills-test-waiver

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
- Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to noise
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
- Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
- Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
- Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

TxDOT's Austin District is looking for a
Roadway Maintenance Tech (General Transportation Tech) II or III, based out of
Lincoln (Giddings). This position will perform routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine and contract maintenance inspection, bridge inspection and record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations, and training other employees.

You may qualify for a one-time recruitment bonus up to
$5000 if you have a Class “A” CDL License (preferably with no transmission restrictions) at time of hire. You must maintain 12-months of continuous employment with TxDOT and meet all other conditions. Current and Previous permanent employees (does not include Summer Internships) do not qualify for the Recruitment Bonus.

This position is for a Roadway Maintenance Tech II, or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.
Salary Plan/Grade:
Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech II: A17 ($42,976.00 – $64,469.00/yearly)
Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech III: A18 ($45,521.00 – $71,055.00/yearly)
