Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities and follows standard practices that do not require frequent supervision.
- Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; uses/moves equipment, tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
- Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
- Maintains highways and rights‑of‑way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
- Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Mows rights‑of‑way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
- Operates light equipment such as a front‑end loader (≤ 1 cubic yard), pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
- Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
- Maintains highways and rights‑of‑way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front‑end loader‑1½ cubic yards or more, tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint stripper, and dump truck.
- Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment, tools, materials and products.
- Inspects routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
- Works on a survey crew; operates survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Maintains highways and rights‑of‑way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Inspects routine and non‑routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
- Trains other employees.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education: No education required.
Experience:
- General Transportation Tech I – No experience required.
- General Transportation Tech II – 1 year experience*.
- General Transportation Tech III – 2 years experience*.
- Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
*Experience is cumulative for lower levels; prior experience at a higher level counts toward the lower level requirement.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license at the time of application; position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must obtain a Commercial Class “A” Driver’s License with an “N” Endorsement or a CDL “A” license within 90 calendar days from date of employment.
Current military or veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 90 days of employment.

General Transportation Tech I:
- Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
- Understanding of applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques.
- Knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
- Familiarity with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Understanding of maintenance concepts, methods, policies, and requirements.
- Knowledge of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes.
Skill in using computers and applicable programs, hand and power tools, and light and heavy highway equipment. Maintaining a safe working relationship. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
General Transportation Tech II:
- Considerable knowledge of inspection methods, basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures, and applicable industry safety standards.
- Proficient skill in coordinating labor, materials, and equipment; prioritizing and organizing work assignments; using computers and applicable programs.
General Transportation Tech III:
- Extensive knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work; understanding of plans, specifications and estimates preparation and compliance requirements.
- Proficient skill in public relations for maintaining effective working relationships and operating light and heavy highway equipment.
- Required to wear protective gear including respirator, hard hat, steel toe boots, and other equipment.
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 or above 100 °F for more than one hour.
- Subject to noise and vibration.
- Subject to hazards such as moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals.
- Subject to atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation).
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Climbing – ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
- Balancing – walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
- Stooping – bending body downward and forward at waist.
- Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to rest on knee(s).
- Reaching – extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Hearing – perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
- Visual Acuity – operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment; determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures.
- This job is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; subject to random drug testing.
- Must be able to report for duty on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

Salaries and grades: Tech I – A16: $40,918 – $61,130; Tech II – A17: $42,976 – $64,469; Tech III – A18: $45,521 – $71,055.
