Job summary

The Delaware Department of Transportation is seeking an Equipment Operator I. The role requires operating on/off-road equipment, performing basic repairs, and supporting snow removal during emergencies. Eligibility includes a valid CDL and readiness for overtime and shift changes.

Responsibilities include handling heavy machinery, performing inspections, and adhering to safety and environmental guidelines. Training and promotion opportunities exist within the department’s ladder system.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment including lubrication, cleaning and servicing.
• Knowledge of operating a variety of equipment used in repair and development of roads, grounds or structures such as jack hammers, power saws, air compressors.
• Knowledge of operating motorized equipment used for groundskeeping, snow removal, or hauling materials.
• Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled).

Responsibilities

• Drives and controls on/off-road equipment to haul supplies to and from the work site.
• Manipulates equipment with integrated mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems by coding computers or adjusting levers.
• Operates mobile equipment and hand tools to dig, grade, backfill and excavate.
• Loads and unloads rock, debris, earth, trees and materials using various lifting tools.
• Performs repairs with hand tools and equipment for roads, grounds, structures.
• Responds to environmental/highway emergencies including snow removal.
• Uses traffic control to manage vehicle movements.
• Performs preventive maintenance and inspections and reports needed repairs.
• May operate bridges to permit water and roadway traffic passage.
