Job summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson invites a full-time student pursuing an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in civil engineering to join our Knoxville team as an intern. You will assist design staff with research, drawings, and documentation, gaining hands-on experience across transportation projects and water resources.

You will participate in site visits, RFI support, and review of shop drawings while learning our design standards.

Qualifications

• Full-time student pursuing an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in civil engineering.
• Interest in transportation, water resources, or roadway construction projects.
• Familiarity with design and production software to develop project documents.

Responsibilities

• Assist with basic design tasks and layout support.
• Help prepare drawings and documents for programming, schematic design, modeling, and construction phases.
• Support creation of presentation and marketing materials.
• Assist with site visits, RFI responses, shop drawings, and updating record drawings.
• Follow quality control procedures and company standards.
• Develop basic design, analysis, and technical skills through hands-on experience.

Position summary:

An intern supports the assigned design department by assisting with a variety of tasks, including special project assignments and active participation in project design and documentation, to gain practical experience and support their educational development.

Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Assist senior or lead (engineers, project managers) with basic design tasks, including research, simple studies, and layout support
• Help prepare drawings and documents for programming, schematic design, modeling, graphics, design development, and construction phases
• Support the creation of presentation and marketing materials
• Assist with construction phase activities, including participating in site visits, supporting RFI responses, reviewing shop drawings, and helping update record drawings
• Follow established quality control procedures and ask questions as needed
• Learn and apply department and company standards and best practices
• Develop basic design, analysis, and technical skills through hands-on experience
• Participate in team meetings and collaborate with team members
• Receive guidance and direction from supervisors and team leaders
• Collaborate with engineers and other multidisciplinary team members

• Familiarity in using standard Microsoft Office for document creation and email communication
• Ability to prepare well organized, clear, and concise written materials

• Ability to manage time and workload effectively with guidance from supervisors
• Strong teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate well with others

• Full-time student currently pursuing an ABET accredited undergraduate degree in civil engineering with an interest in transportation projects, water resources projects, or roadway construction

Qualifications Preferred

• Coursework in a related field
• Previous internship or relevant work experience
• Familiarity with design and production software, with the ability to use these tools to develop project documents and collaborate with project team members

Working Conditions

Work is generally performed within a general office environment, but will sometimes require being in the field. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment. Field conditions vary based on season and weather.
