Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson is seeking a Highways Intern for Richmond, VA to support with project design and documentation and to gain practical experience in a dynamic, employee-owned engineering firm.

You will assist with drawings, site visits, RFI responses, and the preparation of presentations, under the guidance of experienced engineers and architects. This internship emphasizes teamwork, attention to detail, and learning department standards in a collaborative office setting.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing an ABET-accredited undergrad in civil engineering with an interest in transportation projects.
• Familiarity with design and production software to develop project documents and collaborate with project team.

Responsibilities

• Assist senior staff with basic design tasks, including research, simple studies, and layout support.
• Help prepare drawings and documents for programming, schematic design, modeling, graphics, design development, and construction phases.
• Support the creation of presentation and marketing materials.
• Assist with construction phase activities, including site visits, RFI responses, and updating record drawings.
• Follow established quality control procedures and ask questions as needed.
• Learn and apply department and company standards and best practices.
• Develop basic design, analysis, and technical skills through hands-on experience.
• Participate in team meetings and collaborate with team members.
• Receive guidance from supervisors and team leaders and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members.

Position summary: JMT is seeking a Highways intern for their Richmond, VA to support with a variety of tasks, including special project assignments active participation in project design & documentation, gain practical experience and support their educational development.

Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

The hourly rate associated with this position is $22.00 - $27.00, which is based on education level.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Assist senior or lead (architects, engineers, interior designers, project managers) with basic design tasks, including research, simple studies, and layout support
• Help prepare drawings and documents for programming, schematic design, modeling, graphics, design development, and construction phases
• Support the creation of presentation and marketing materials
• Assist with construction phase activities, including participating in site visits, supporting RFI responses, reviewing shop drawings, and helping update record drawings
• Follow established quality control procedures and ask questions as needed
• Learn and apply department and company standards and best practices
• Develop basic design, analysis, and technical skills through hands-on experience
• Participate in team meetings and collaborate with team members
• Receive guidance and direction from supervisors and team leaders
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, interior designers, and other multidisciplinary team members

Required Experience

• Full-time student currently pursuing an ABET accredited undergraduate degree in civil engineering with an interest in transportation projects

Qualifications Preferred

• Coursework in a related field
• Previous internship or relevant work experience
• Familiarity with design and production software, with the ability to use these tools to develop project documents and collaborate with project team members

Working Conditions

Work is generally performed within an office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25lbs) may be required as needed.
