Job description

Description

The Opportunity

RETTEW is seeking an experienced Roadway Engineer III to join our Transportation team and take greater ownership of roadway design and project delivery.

This role is designed for an engineer who has built a solid foundation in roadway engineering and is ready to independently handle increasingly complex assignments, contribute to PennDOT projects, and become a trusted technical resource to project teams.

We recognize that roadway engineers often develop deep expertise in different areas of project delivery. You do not need to have done everything. We are looking for strong roadway fundamentals, sound engineering judgment, PennDOT experience, and the ability to take ownership of your work while continuing to broaden your technical experience.

What You'll Do

As a Roadway Engineer III, you will:

  • Perform and lead roadway engineering design and analysis for assigned projects and major project components.
  • Develop roadway plans, alignments, profiles, cross sections, grading, and other roadway design elements based on project needs and your technical experience.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, plans, specifications, reports, quantities, estimates, permit applications, and construction documents.
  • Apply engineering judgment to evaluate alternatives and develop practical solutions to roadway design and constructability challenges.
  • Use professional CAD and transportation-design software to develop accurate, high-quality project deliverables.
  • Interpret and apply applicable PennDOT standards, design criteria, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Coordinate technical work with Project Managers, Engineers, Designers, Survey, Environmental, Traffic, and other project disciplines.
  • Support Project Managers with project scope, schedules, budgets, deliverables, and resource coordination.
  • Participate in coordination with PennDOT, municipalities, clients, utilities, and other project stakeholders.
  • Perform technical and QA/QC reviews of project deliverables based on experience and assignment.
  • Participate in field investigations and construction-phase engineering activities.
  • Identify technical issues, project risks, and constructability concerns and contribute to developing solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance to developing Engineers and Designers as experience allows.
  • Support development of scopes of work, technical approaches, proposals, and project estimates.

What We're Looking For

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Professional engineering experience focused on roadway or transportation infrastructure design.
  • Professional experience supporting PennDOT roadway or transportation projects.
  • Professional experience using CAD and/or transportation-design software.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently perform roadway engineering and design assignments.
  • Experience preparing engineering plans, calculations, reports, specifications, estimates, or other technical project deliverables.
  • Working knowledge of roadway engineering principles, design standards, and project-delivery requirements.
  • Ability to interpret and apply applicable PennDOT and other roadway-design requirements.
  • Experience coordinating technical assignments within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and deadlines.
Additional Experience We Value
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer and/or MicroStation.
  • Horizontal and vertical roadway design experience.
  • Roadway grading and cross-section development.
  • Intersection design.
  • ADA and pedestrian accessibility design.
  • Roadway drainage coordination or design.
  • Erosion and sediment control coordination or design.
  • Utility coordination.
  • Maintenance and protection of traffic.
  • Signing and pavement-marking design.
  • Quantity calculations and cost estimating.
  • Roadway rehabilitation, resurfacing, or reconstruction projects.
  • Technical or QA/QC review experience.
  • Construction-phase engineering experience.
  • Experience providing technical guidance or mentorship to developing Engineers or Designers.
  • Experience supporting project schedules, budgets, scopes, or proposals.
  • Client, municipal, or agency coordination experience.

Grow Into Your Next Level

Roadway Engineer III is an important transition point in an engineering career at RETTEW.

You'll have opportunities to deepen the roadway expertise you've already developed while gaining exposure to other parts of transportation project delivery.

At RETTEW, you can:

  • Take ownership of increasingly complex roadway engineering assignments.
  • Expand your experience across different aspects of roadway design rather than being limited to one narrow technical function.
  • Strengthen your PennDOT project experience.
  • Work alongside experienced transportation Engineers and Project Managers.
  • Become a trusted technical resource to project teams.
  • Mentor developing Engineers and Designers.
  • Gain greater exposure to project scope, schedule, budget, agency coordination, and client interaction.
  • Continue developing toward Professional Engineer licensure if you have not already obtained your PE.
  • Explore longer-term opportunities in technical leadership or project management based on your strengths and interests.
  • Build ownership in RETTEW through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
