Job description

The Opportunity

RETTEW is seeking a Roadway Engineer II to join our Transportation team and contribute to roadway and infrastructure projects that improve mobility, safety, and connectivity in the communities we serve.

This opportunity is designed for an early-career engineer who has established a foundation in roadway design and is ready to take greater ownership of technical assignments while continuing to develop their engineering judgment and capabilities.

You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, designers, and project managers on PennDOT and other transportation projects while gaining exposure to different aspects of roadway project delivery.

We recognize that roadway engineers can develop experience in different areas of design early in their careers. You do not need to have done everything. We are looking for strong roadway fundamentals, PennDOT project experience, professional design-software experience, and the ability to continue growing technically.

Work Environment

Workplace Designation: Hybrid

Locations: Any RETTEW Office Location

This position combines regular in-office collaboration with remote-work flexibility, focused technical design work, multidisciplinary project coordination, and occasional field, client, or agency activities.

What You’ll Do

As a Roadway Engineer II, you will perform roadway engineering design and analysis while taking increasing ownership of assigned technical work.

You will support the development of roadway plans and project deliverables, apply applicable design standards, coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams, and work alongside experienced transportation professionals to solve practical engineering challenges.

The role provides an opportunity to deepen the roadway experience you already have while expanding into areas of transportation project delivery you may not have encountered in your current position.

  • Perform roadway engineering design, calculations, analysis, and plan development under the guidance of experienced engineers and project managers.
  • Develop roadway plans and design elements such as alignments, profiles, cross sections, grading, and other components based on project assignments.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, plans, reports, quantities, estimates, specifications, and other technical deliverables.
  • Use professional CAD and transportation-design software to develop accurate, high-quality project deliverables.
  • Interpret and apply applicable PennDOT, AASHTO, municipal, and other roadway design standards and requirements.
  • Support roadway rehabilitation, reconstruction, intersection, pedestrian, drainage, utility, maintenance and protection of traffic, and other design activities based on project needs and experience.
  • Coordinate technical work with engineers, designers, survey, environmental, traffic, and other project disciplines.
  • Support project schedules, budgets, and deliverable requirements.
  • Participate in field investigations and construction-phase engineering activities.
  • Support coordination with PennDOT, municipalities, utilities, clients, and other project stakeholders.
  • Participate in technical and QA/QC reviews and incorporate review comments into project deliverables.
  • Identify technical questions or potential project issues and work with senior team members to develop practical solutions.
  • Support preparation of project scopes, technical approaches, proposals, and estimates as experience develops.
Requirements

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Professional engineering experience involving roadway or transportation infrastructure design.
  • Professional experience supporting PennDOT roadway or transportation projects.
  • Professional experience using CAD and/or transportation-design software.
  • Working knowledge of roadway engineering fundamentals and design principles.
  • Experience preparing or contributing to engineering plans, calculations, reports, or other technical deliverables.
  • Ability to interpret and apply engineering standards and project requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Ability to manage assignments, priorities, and deadlines.
Additional Experience We Value

Candidates do not need experience in every area listed below. Roadway engineers often develop deeper expertise in particular aspects of project delivery, and we value both specialized experience and broad exposure.

  • OpenRoads Designer and/or MicroStation.
  • Horizontal and vertical roadway design.
  • Roadway profiles and cross sections.
  • Roadway grading.
  • Intersection design.
  • ADA and pedestrian accessibility design.
  • Roadway drainage coordination or design.
  • Erosion and sediment control.
  • Utility coordination.
  • Maintenance and protection of traffic.
  • Signing and pavement marking.
  • Quantity calculations and cost estimating.
  • Roadway rehabilitation, resurfacing, or reconstruction.
  • Construction-phase engineering support.
  • Coordination with PennDOT, municipalities, utilities, or other project stakeholders.
  • Progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
What This Opportunity Offers

At RETTEW, you’ll have the opportunity to build breadth without being expected to arrive knowing every aspect of roadway engineering.

You’ll have opportunities to:

  • Strengthen the roadway-design expertise you have already developed.
  • Gain exposure to areas of roadway engineering you may not have encountered at your current employer.
  • Expand your PennDOT project experience.
  • Work directly with experienced Transportation Engineers and Project Managers.
  • Take increasing ownership of technical assignments as your capabilities grow.
  • Work across multidisciplinary transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Develop engineering judgment through real project challenges.
  • Continue progressing toward Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Build toward Engineer III and future technical or project-leadership opportunities.
  • Share in RETTEW’s long-term success through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
