Job summary

Volkert Inc. in Virginia seeks an experienced Roadway Engineer to support the Mid Atlantic Region, in Springfield or Virginia Beach, VA. A BS in Civil Engineering is required.

The role involves leading project designs, coordinating with subconsultants, and delivering transportation and civil design projects on time and within budget.

Candidates should have 5–10 years of roadway design experience, FE; PE preferred, and proficiency with MicroStation/OpenRoads Designer.

  • FE required; PE preferred.
  • Experience with DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer.

Responsibilities

  • Familiarity with plans, quantities, and engineering estimates, developing construction specifications, and coordinating with subconsultants.
  • Leading or assisting in the development of project designs and directing Junior Engineers and designers to successfully execute and deliver project work, while implementing client‑focused strategies.
  • Applying established and well‑defined engineering techniques, procedures, policies, or standards.
  • Preparing and modifying reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, and designs for projects.
  • Aspiring to work in a team environment and willing to participate in business development efforts and meetings with clients. Work as part of a team to deliver a range of transportation and civil design projects.
  • Participating in ongoing development, communication, and implementation of team concepts, programs, and policies. Coordinating work to ensure best practices with all team members.
  • Attending appropriate team meetings.
  • Adjusting and correlating data, recognizing discrepancies in results.
  • Identifying and analyzing problems using reasoning to arrive at conclusions.
  • Applying standard practices and techniques to accomplish work assignments.
  • Understanding and adhering to assigned phase and task schedules and budgets to ensure timely and cost‑effective completion of projects.
  • Adhering to company standards for quality assurance and quality control as defined in the quality manual.

We are currently searching for an experienced Roadway Engineer to support our Mid Atlantic Region located in Springfield or Virginia Beach, VA.

To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, a BS degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four‑year college or university.

What you’ll be doing:

What you need to have:
  • BS degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four‑year college or university.
  • 5–10 years relevant experience in roadway design.
  • Proven skills in meeting DOT expectations, schedules, and budgets.
  • VDOT experience preferred but not required.
  • FE required; PE preferred.
  • Experience with DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation and experience with OpenRoads Designer.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a pre‑employment drug screening in accordance with federal guidelines.
  • Valid driver's license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR).
