Job summary

Volkert Inc. is seeking a Roadway Engineer to join the Gulf Region in Alabama, with opportunities in Birmingham, Huntsville, and Tuscaloosa. The role focuses on geometric highway design, drainage analysis, and preparation of construction plans.

You will work on roadway design projects, cost estimates, and technical memos, collaborating in a team environment while maintaining schedules and supporting overtime or travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is required.
• 1–5 years of roadway/transportation experience.
• EI Certification or PE License (if eligible).
• Knowledge of transportation standards and FHWA guidelines.
• Proficient with MS Office; experience with design software.

Job description

Are we the road to your future? We are currently searching for a highly motivated Roadway Engineer to join our Gulf Region in Birmingham, Huntsville, and Tuscaloosa, AL.

What you'll be doing:

• Engineering design including geometric design of highways and streets, drainage design (hydrology and hydraulics)
• Prepare construction plans and project displays
• Assist in roadway plan set design & production including roadway alignments, cross-sections, drainage, maintenance of traffic and erosion and sedimentation control
• Assist in preparing cost estimates, reports, and technical memos
• Prepare memorandums summarize analysis work

What you need to have:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
• 1 - 5 years of experience
• EI Certification or PE License (if eligible)
• Knowledge of fundamental transportation standards
• Familiarity with state and FHWA design standards, guidelines, and policies
• Proficient in the use of MS Office tools such as Excel, Word, and Powerpoint
• Experience with computer programs such as MicroStation, ArcGIS, InRoads, various CAD, and OpenRoads Designer
• Self-motivated to meet individual goals and maintain accountability in a team environment
• Able to maintain project schedules, which may require occasional extended hours and overnight travel
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• General interpersonal skills including active listening, teamwork, responsibility, dependability, leadership, motivation, flexibility, and patience
• ALDOT or local government design experience preferred
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
• Valid driver's license
• A satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)
