Job summary

Alfred Benesch & Company seeks a Roadway Design Technical Manager to lead a team in planning and designing roadway projects, while self‑performing and directing project teams and managing client relations. The role includes contributing to strategic growth and ensuring design accuracy across technical analyses and documentation.

The ideal candidate has a Civil Engineering background, 7+ years of experience, and a PE license, with proficiency in MicroStation/Open Roads Design and knowledge of

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related discipline required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in engineering.
  • PE License.
  • NCDOT experience preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate with others in a team environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of software for roadway design and proficiency in key programs.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable codes and standards governing roadway design.
  • Experience in MicroStation is required; Open Roads Design is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and direct the advancement of the technical skills of staff while executing projects.
  • Manage technical elements of a project, including assessment of analyses and approaches.
  • Ensure the development of high‑quality engineering documents.
  • Communicate technical progress and issues to Project Manager in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to internal procedures for quality control, documentation, and project tracking.
  • Contribute to other project work as a technical specialist or advisor, as needed.
  • Provide input into the growth of the practice.
  • Perform, review, and manage technical analysis and design; ensure design details meet PQMP.
  • Work toward being a leading subject matter expert within the discipline.

Roadway Design Technical Manager

We have a career opportunity for a roadway engineer with a proven track record of successfully managing a broad range of projects. In this role you will both self‑perform and direct project teams in the planning and design of projects, as well as play an important role in managing client relationships. You will also contribute to strategic initiatives that drive the growth of the roadway group.

The Impact You Will Have

  • Manage technical elements of a project, including assessing what analyses need to be completed, and what is the correct approach (i.e. software, design assumptions, etc.) for that analysis
  • Ensure the development of high‑quality engineering documents
  • Communicate technical progress and issues to Project Manager in a timely and ongoing manner
  • Adhere to all internal procedures for quality control, documentation, and project tracking
  • Contribute to other project work as a technical specialist or advisor, as needed
  • Provide input into the growth of the practice
  • Perform, review, and manage technical analysis and design. Take responsibility for the completeness of design details and ensure compliance with PQMP
  • Work toward being a leading subject matter expert of targeted elements within the discipline
What We Are Looking For
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related discipline required
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in engineering
  • PE License
  • NCDOT experience preferred
  • Ability to collaborate with others in a team environment relating to a variety of tasks
  • Advanced knowledge of software appropriate for roadway design, showing proficiency in most programs specific to this role/discipline
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable codes and standards that govern roadway design
  • Experience in MicroStation is required and experience in Open Roads Design is highly desirable
