King County's Department of Local Services (DLS) is currently recruiting for Seasonal Short-Term Temporary Roads Maintenance Worker I positions within the Road Services Division, Maintenance Section. These roles are expected to last up to six months, and provide an opportunity to gain hands-on experience, and develop valuable new skills. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
King County is the local service provider for the roughly quarter-million people who live in the unincorporated areas of the county; taken together, Unincorporated King County would be the second-largest city in the state. The Department of Local Services includes a Director's Office with a Community Service Area group, and the Road Services and Permitting Divisions. Together, this department provides a single executive point of accountability for delivery of local services to all of the unincorporated areas.

The King County Road Services Division designs, builds, operates and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner to protect the public's investment and facilitate safe travel. The division is committed to ensuring the county's transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road and 182 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

  • Ensure the safety of crews and the public by setting up appropriate traffic control measures on streets and highways, including flagging, and placing signs, cones and barricades as needed

  • Prepare surfaces for asphalt overlay and repairs, and shoulder maintenance.

  • Perform drainage structure repairs and minor construction, including work on pipes, catch basins and manholes; clean ditches, gutters, catch basins, culverts, and drainage tiles.

  • Install and maintain guardrails.

  • Plant vegetation and cuttings; cut and remove brush to maintain clear and safe areas.

  • Safely operate trimmer/weed-eater, chainsaw, and other landscape equipment for long durations in varying weather.

  • Assist in the operation of Vactor equipment.

  • Shovel snow, gravel, asphalt, and dirt; rake asphalt and tar pavement joints.

  • Dig post-holes and set posts.

  • Read various road maps and construction blueprints.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Have a desire to learn construction, road maintenance, and heavy manual labor areas.

  • Possess traffic control knowledge and familiarity with setting up traffic control measures on streets and highways.

  • Are skilled in performing minor construction and repairs on drainage infrastructure (pipes, manholes, catch basins, culverts, etc.).

  • Are comfortable with physically demanding tasks such as shoveling snow, gravel, asphalt, and dirt; and digging post holes and setting posts.

  • Are knowledgeable in the proper use and care of hand tools and equipment commonly used in construction, road maintenance, or other heavy manual labor-intensive fields.

  • Understands and follows safety protocols and regulations related to construction, and road maintenance, including fall protection, confined space entry, and handling of, hazardous materials.

  • Have the ability to read and interpret maps, (e.g., Thomas Brothers or similar), and applying basic geographic orientation.

  • Have strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.

  • Demonstrates behaviors that include fairness, respect, and inclusiveness.

  • Have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and providing excellent customer service.

  • Are flexible and willing to perform additional duties as assigned to support team operations.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Have a valid Washington State Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one prior to start date.

  • Have a valid Washington State Flagging Certificate, valid CPR and First Aid certifications OR ability to obtain within two (2) months of hire.

  • An offer of employment will be contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.


WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to lift, carry, move, or handle up to 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to perform duties involving physical labor including bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, and twisting.

  • Must be able to perform work outdoors and in inclement weather.


WORK LOCATION:
We have multiple sites across King County, WA. The primary base of operations is located in Renton, WA, with outlying maintenances facilities located in: Black Diamond, Vashon, Skykomish, Fall City and Redmond.

PRACTICAL EXAM/INTERVIEWS ALL IN ONE DAY:Those applicants who pass theinitialscreeningwill be invited toparticipateina in-person practical exam/interview, on the same day, the week of May 26th, 2025. Only those who pass the practical exam will move forward to interview.

WHO MAY APPLY:
This recruitment is open to all qualified applicants and in addition to fillingeight (8) Short-Term Temporary positions, it may also be used to fill current and or/future short-term temporary positions over the next six months.

WORK SCHEDULE:The workschedule will consist of four, ten-hour days in thespring/summer, Monday – Thursday, 6:00 am – 4:30 pm, and five, eight-hour days in the fall/winter, Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. EMERGENCY DESIGNATION STATUS:This position has been designated (First Responder) - Employees who, in the early stages of an incident, are responsible for protecting and preserving life, property, evidence, the environment, and restoring order.
