RN Unit Educator - Observation Unit-Full Time- Days- Detroit

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Nurse Manager and collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Specialist and Education Specialists, plans, implements and evaluates educational and quality improvement activities on the nursing unit. The Unit Educator role models nursing excellence in patient care through clinical practice, continuous quality improvement and integration of new nursing knowledge into practice. The Unit Educator adheres to all standards of nursing care and standards within the job description.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. People
    Models and coaches others in effective communication, positive problem-solving techniques, and healthy work environment standards.
    Practices active listening skills, while seeking to understand, while demonstrating respect for others in verbal and non-verbal behaviors.
    Develops and maintains effective working relationships and team building with coworkers and other members of the healthcare team.
    Meets the educational needs off-shift and Cadre employees.
    Respects the diversity and contributions of all members and is receptive to feedback.
  2. Service
    Role models and resources others for excellence in nursing practice and provide direct care as guided by unit needs.
    Casts a positive shadow regarding leadership and unit goals.
    Models, coaches, and identifies outstanding service excellence behaviors.
    Participates in institutional educational roll-outs and initiatives.
    Participates and coaches others in shared governance and accountability principles.
    Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication.
    Supports the mission of each patient first.
  3. Quality and Safety
    Assists in achieving unit compliance related to regulatory agencies.
    Participates in the assessment, development, implementation, and revision of unit Standards of Care, and resulting Policies and Procedures related identified units’ needs.
    Partners with the leadership team to conduct unit audits and unit accountability related to regulatory standards and nursing practice.
    Participates in sentinel event reviews and quality improvement teams.
    Implements process improvement strategies and evaluate effectiveness.
    Maintains clinical competence demonstrated clinical excellence.
  4. Growth
    Assists the CNS/NM/UD with preceptor development, orientee scheduling, and orientation.
    Promotes professional development of staff by sharing information regarding formal and informal educational opportunities.
    Assists in planning and implementation of process improvement.
    Participates in the individual process improvements plans as appropriate.
  5. Research and Education
    Coordinates, schedules, documents, and facilitates completion of mandatory competencies.
    In collaboration with the CNS completes a knowledge gap analysis based on both objective and subjective data.
    Develops unit based competencies consistent with knowledge gap data obtained.
    Leads unit education group in educational outcomes.
    Participates and supports unit research activities.
  6. Community
    Participates in community activities and/or professional organizations.
    Represents HFHS by promoting an atmosphere of care, concern, pride and respect to internal and external customers.
    Maintains awareness of personal actions and activities and the impact on the image of nursing.
  7. Finance
    Demonstrates cost effective practice and positive patient outcomes.
    Plans educational opportunities within unit budgeted goals.
    Assists in identifying human and supply resource utilization improvement opportunities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
Equivalent of four (4) years clinical experience with defined patient population preferred.
Demonstrates interest and ability to teach patients, families and co-workers.
Demonstrates leadership, good communication skills, problem solving and organizational skills, flexibility, self-directiveness and initiative required.
Broad computer skills including Microsoft Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiar with use of internet.
