Overview

• Number of beds on unit: 43
• Patient population (age, diagnosis, specifics about unit): NT7 is a 43-bed unit specializing in the care of acute and chronic digestive surgical patients. We are bariatric certified by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Surgical patients include trunk trauma patients and high acuity surgical advanced care patients. We care for patients requiring surgeries from Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) to Colon Rectal Surgeries. As a level trauma center, most regional trauma patients are admitted here.
• Nurse to Patient ratio: 1:4-6 for surgical/medical patients; 1:3 for surgical advanced care patients
• Department culture and resources: North Tower 7 is a high acuity, critical-thinking unit that collaborates extensively with surgical residents and attendings. Length of stay varies based on diagnosis and interventions. Our focus is on teamwork to provide safe, quality care. We value connections and education, aiming to comfort patients through difficult transitions. The unit has received the highest Daisy Award within the organization. Resources include a full-time educator, part-time educator, two nurse supervisors, a manager, and charge nurses.
• Frequent nursing skills/equipment used: wound vacs, TPN, PPN, epidurals, chest tubes, drips, PEG tubes, colostomy/ileostomy, tracheostomy, JP drains, penrose drains, lift equipment, Foley/IV/NG/Mediport insertions, central line care, lab draws, nursing prioritization, IV pumps, PCA pumps, feeding pumps, SCDs, telemetry monitoring, patient connection

Qualifications

License/Certifications: Licensed RN in Illinois (IDFPR); BLS within 30 days (AHA)

Education: H.S. Diploma or GED

Other Knowledge/Skills: Performs all responsibilities per unit scope, maintains accurate documentation, conducts initial assessments, develops and modifies care plans, ensures safety, communicates effectively, provides post-op and complex wound care, collaborates with surgical teams.
