Begin your nursing journey in OU Health’s Surgical line in our Surgical Specialty unit with the trajectory to transfer to the SICU after completing the RN Residency year. This program allows you to increase your knowledge of surgical-specific care while providing opportunities to progress to ICU level care. You will learn from experienced team members and attend the same education sessions as SICU nurses, gaining comprehensive experience in surgical nursing care.

Less than one (1) year of experience is preferred for this position.

Program Description

The OU Health Nurse Residency Program provides new graduate nurses with resources and experiences to build a strong foundation for their careers. Residents receive guidance from a primary preceptor and a clinical education specialist, participate in ongoing structured learning, and are supported through mentoring and preparation for national certification in their chosen specialty. Candidates must hold a current RN license or a multistate compact RN license in Oklahoma and have less than one year of RN clinical experience to qualify.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality patient care in a hospital setting, adhering to OU Health values and professional standards.
  • Manage assigned patient or group of patients, document responses and interventions accurately.
  • Assist physicians during examinations and minor procedures.
  • Monitor patient physiological data and respond as needed.
  • Administer medications and regulate IV infusions and blood products.
  • Ensure safe and competent patient care delivery.
  • Address patient and family inquiries, make appropriate referrals, and foster a growth mindset through mentorship and professional development.
  • Develop personal and professional goals aligned with departmental metrics.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
RN I
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Less than one year of RN experience
  • Current RN license in Oklahoma or a multistate compact license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
RN II
  • Same educational requirements
  • 1-3 years of RN experience
  • Same licensing and certification
RN III
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Master's preferred)
  • Over 3 years of RN experience
  • Specialty certifications preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of nursing theory, practices, and procedures
  • Organizational and planning skills
  • Effective communication and cultural competence
  • Proficiency with computer applications for safety and quality
  • Ability to advocate for patients and manage conflicts constructively
