The RN Residency Program requires:
- BSN and minimum 3.0 GPA
- Texas RN license
- Active American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support certification

The UT Southwestern July 2025 (Cohort 18) RN Residency Program is open to BSN graduates from the December 2024, May 2025, 2024, and August 2025 graduating classes, as well as experienced BSN RNs with less than 12 months of RN experience at the start of the program (October 2025). Application instructions and requirements include:
- A completed online application
- Resume showing all work experience, involvement in professional organizations, and volunteerism
- Transcript (most recent – unofficial is acceptable) with a 3.0 GPA or higher
- *Internal candidates must apply as internal candidates and are asked to upload a letter of recommendation from their current manager
DO NOT submit your application until you have ALL the required documents. Upload one master file including all documents. Applications received without the listed items cannot be processed.

- Acute Medical Units
- Acute Surgical Units
The residency program begins October 6, 2025. Graduate Nurses must have their license posted on the Board of Nursing before the close of business on October 1, 2025.
Job Description
The RN Resident is classified as a Registered Nurse with less than 12 months of experience, including new nurse graduates with a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an ACEN or CCNE accredited/state approved program. RN Residents will gain extensive orientation across care settings while transitioning into professional practice within the UT Southwestern Medical Center Nurse Residency Program.
Essential Functions
- Perform and accurately document physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments, considering age-specific criteria (children, adolescents, adults, older adults).
- Anticipate patient and family needs, developing appropriate plans of care using critical thinking skills. Maintain and utilize competencies per unit expectations.
- Identify and implement nursing interventions based on assessments. Document interventions accurately and timely. Collaborate with the healthcare team to optimize patient care.
- Prioritize interventions based on assessments. Recognize and report changes in patient condition promptly. Follow up as appropriate.
- Evaluate interventions and modify care plans accordingly. Document all actions accurately and promptly.
- Adhere to hospital and nursing policies, procedures, and standards. Suggest improvements based on current research and literature.
- Provide education to patients and families, documenting all educational interactions. Ensure understanding and comfort with discharge instructions.
- Orient and welcome patients and families, encouraging participation in care. Review care plans regularly and explain procedures and medications clearly.
- Take accountability for workplace actions. Report errors promptly and follow up to rectify issues.
- Respond effectively to patient and family complaints, escalating appropriately. Use the chain of command to resolve issues.
- Participate in performance improvement activities. Attend scheduled meetings and educational sessions. Supervise support personnel and new nurses, delegating duties within legal boundaries.
Minimum Qualifications
- New nurse graduates with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program or an Associate’s Degree (ADN) with current UTSW experience.
- Current Texas (or eNLC) RN license and BLS certification from AHA.
- Additional certification or licensure may be required for specific specialties.
Equivalent qualifications require prior approval from the Vice President for Human Resources or designee.
