Job description

Job Summary: Provides care to patients undergoing surgery by assisting with patient preparation and circulating for various surgical procedures.

Job Duties
  1. Coordinates room schedule and patient arrival in the Surgical Suite.
  2. Communicates with family representatives to allay concerns.
  3. Directs and coordinates nursing activities within the assigned operating room.
  4. Supervises and assists operative teams in aseptic technique.
  5. Follows surgical procedures to anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
  6. Observes, interprets, documents, and reports signs indicative of changes in the patient's condition when receiving local anesthesia.
  7. Supervises ancillary personnel.
  8. Maintains safety and preventative maintenance activities for all medical and technical equipment to minimize failures and unsafe conditions.
  9. Cleans, sterilizes, and prepares instruments according to established protocols to ensure asepsis and availability.
  10. Provides accurate care and handling of specimens and cultures.
  11. Ensures proper handling of contaminated materials.
  12. Counts sponges, needles, and instruments per policy.
  13. Assists in cleaning and preparing the OR between procedures.
  14. Participates in developing and maintaining an effective quality improvement program.
  15. Safeguards patients from dangers and hazards.
  16. Operates sterilizers as necessary.
  17. Maintains compliance with system policies, nursing standards of care, practice, and regulatory requirements.
