Job summary

UC San Diego Health seeks a registered nurse (RN) for the Medical Oncology PCU on Jacobs Medical Center. The unit provides chemotherapy and biotherapy, with autonomous nursing care and interdisciplinary collaboration to support patient well-being.

The role requires California RN licensure, BLS/ACLS, and chemotherapy certification with post-hire development. On-site days, 12-hour shifts, 90% appointment, 2 openings, and a competitive pay scale apply.

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • RN License issued by the State of California.
  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get UCSD ART within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Chemotherapy Certification at time of hire or commitment to initiate the certification process within 6 months of hire date and to achieve certification within one (1) year of hire date.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years recent experience in inpatient oncology (within the last 2 years). (If insufficient applicant pool, department may consider RNs with one (1) year of experience within the specialty of oncology, Palliative care or IMU/PCU.)
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities, and to quickly assess moderately-complex problems to develop potential solutions.
  • Must be able to function in a fast-paced environment, have excellent interpersonal andcommunication skills, and consistently demonstrate empathy and kindness to all staff and patients.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and clinical skills to identify and implement nursing interventions andevaluate results.
  • Must have excellent skills to communicate and influence effectively with all levels of staff,physicians, patients and external constituents, both verbally and in writing.

Jacobs Medical Center 5FG is a 24 bed Medical Oncology/Palliative Care Progressive Care Unit. Several disciplines collaborate to provide prescribed oncology care including chemotherapy and biotherapy. The unit is also designated as the overflow for Blood and Marrow Transplant patients. The nursing team is dedicated to care for patients who need aggressive symptom management. They work closely with a multi-disciplinary palliative care team, implementing a holistic approach to physical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
  • BSN.
  • Palliative care RN experience.
  • Prior experience with Chemotherapy.
  • Certified in PCCN, OCN or Palliative Care.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and various locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Selected candidate may be hired at the CNIII level pending review and approval by the Nurse Executive Council.
Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $138,330 - $193,892 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $66.25 - $92.86

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
