General Description: An OU Health Registered Nurse (RN) I works under general supervision, providing high-quality care to patients in a hospital setting with health problems ranging from simple to complex. RN I is suited for those who are novices or advanced beginners progressing toward competency. As they develop, they rely less on rules and more on principles independent of specific situations, gaining enough experience to formulate their own principles.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Align behaviors with OU Health values and maintain nursing professional standards.
  • Assume responsibility for assigned patients.
  • Document responses to interventions and treatments, noting changes in physician orders.
  • Assist physicians during examinations and minor procedures.
  • Monitor and respond to physiological data of patients.
  • Administer prescribed medications.
  • Manage intravenous infusions and blood products.
  • Deliver safe and competent patient care.
  • Address patient complaints promptly and collaboratively.
  • Communicate procedures and care plans to patients and families.
  • Refer patients to appropriate personnel for care needs.
  • Seek mentorship, remain open to feedback, and maintain licensure to develop skills.
  • Create a professional career plan and set personal and performance goals.
  • Promote an inclusive workforce valuing individual differences.
  • Delegate tasks to support staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
RN I
  • Education: Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Experience: 0-3 years in patient care.
  • License/Certification: Current RN license (Oklahoma or multistate eNLC) and BLS certification.
RN II
  • Education: Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Experience: 3-5 years in patient care.
  • License/Certification: Current RN license and BLS certification.
RN III
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree required; Master's preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years in patient care.
  • License/Certification: Current RN license, BLS certification, and preferred specialty certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of professional nursing practices.
  • Organizational and evaluative skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to advocate for patients and foster an inclusive environment.
  • Competency in computer applications related to patient safety.
