Job summary

UAB Medicine's Hospitalist Unit Highlands 6 North in Birmingham, AL is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse to apply the nursing process in promoting health and preventing illness. You will collaborate with physicians, families, and the care team to deliver safe, evidence-based care in a remodeled 24-bed unit with virtual nursing support.

Applicants must have a graduate of an accredited nursing program, an Alabama RN license or eligibility, and BLS certification; ACLS/PALS may be required

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
  • RN license with the Alabama Board of Nursing required or eligibility.
  • BLS certification required or to be obtained within 30 days of employment. ACLS/PALS may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize the nursing process to care for and counsel individuals in health maintenance and illness prevention.
  • Identify patient needs using the AACN Synergy Model and guide nursing judgments.
  • Delegate, coordinate and manage all aspects of nursing care provided to the patient, family and community.
  • Collaborate with the patient, family and health care team, with licensed physicians, psychologists, podiatrist, and/or dentist.

Job Highlights

The Hospitalist Unit, also known as Highlands 6 North, is a 24-bed acute care unit located at UAB Hospital-Highlands that provides care to medical patients with a variety of acute care medical needs. This unit was remodeled in 2023, and the improved design was influenced and driven by our nurses to meet the specific needs of our bedside staff. Highlands 6 North is also the only acute care unit at UAB Hospital-Highlands with virtual nursing support, which means each room is equipped with two-way audio/visual for collaboration with the virtual nursing team. This unit has received a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence, which recognizes health care organizations like UAB Medicine that provide exceptional care through positive patient outcomes and greater overall patient satisfaction.

UAB Hospital Medicine, or Hospitalist, was the first hospital medicine program in the state of Alabama and one of the first in the Southeast. They provide care for the largest population of patients discharged from UAB Medicine.

Job Description

To utilize the nursing process to care and/or counsel individuals in the promotion and maintenance of health and the prevention of illness and injury. Using a systematic critical-thinking approach to guide data gathering, assessment, nursing judgment, intervention and evaluation of human responses to actual and potential health problems through activities such as health teaching, health counseling and the provision of care supportive and restorative of life and supportive of a peaceful death. To identify patient needs using the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Synergy Model. To delegate, coordinate and manage all aspects of nursing care provided to the patient, their family and our community in a timely and cost-effective manner. To deliver patient care in collaboration with the patient, their family and all members of the health care team and with the knowledge of a licensed physician, psychologist, podiatrist, and/or dentist.

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Nursing program required. Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. If job is in a free-standing emergency department (FSED) location, one (1) year of emergency or ICU nursing experience is required. Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment. Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
