Job summary

Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital is seeking a dedicated RN to join the 6400 Behavioral Health unit. You will provide patient-centered nursing care, support crisis intervention, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team during night shifts from 7:00pm to 7:30am, with every other weekend.

Primary responsibilities include assessments, care planning, medication administration, and patient advocacy. Required RN licensure and BLS certification; ED triage and inpatient psych experience

Qualifications

• Current state RN licensure in good standing.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through AHA or Red Cross.
• If assigned to ED Triage primarily, five years of nursing experience and three years of inpatient psych experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care for patients on the 6400 Behavioral Health unit.
• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for a patient population.
• Complete ongoing assessments and respond to changes in patient condition.
• Develop care plans with patients and families, coordinate interdisciplinary care, and advocate for patients.
• Administer treatments and medications as prescribed.
• Participate in interdisciplinary evaluation and quality improvement efforts.
• Triage psychiatric patients presenting to the ED and coordinate admission paperwork.

6400 is a 26-bed behavioral health unit dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals experiencing behavioral health crises. The unit includes three medical beds, and patients are medically cleared prior to admission. Caregivers have the opportunity to develop valuable skills in crisis intervention, de-escalation, therapeutic communication, and building therapeutic relationships while collaborating with psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Day-to-day responsibilities include participating in shift huddles, providing patient-centered care, monitoring patient behaviors and needs, assisting with daily activities, supporting crisis intervention and de-escalation, and communicating changes or concerns to the care team. Senior Behavioral Health Technicians conduct patient safety rounds every 15 minutes, while RNs complete hourly rounds. The 6400 team fosters a supportive, close-knit environment where caregivers work together, welcome new team members, and provide ongoing support to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.

A caregiver in this position works nights, 7:00pm—7:30am. Every other weekend.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Provide direct nursing care.
• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for a given patient population.
• Complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.
• Develop and update goals, involve patients and families in developing plans of care, coordinate the interdisciplinary plan of care and serve as a patient advocate.
• Administer treatments and medication.
• Participate in the ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation of patient/family outcomes, improvement of care and quality improvement process.
• Delegate tasks/assignments and serve as a resource person.
• Complete psychiatric core curriculum and Managing Disruptive Behavior Training within six months of hire.
• Provide individualized and timely interventions, establish priorities for delivering patient care, document nursing interventions and patient responses, participate in QI data collection, communicate information to oncoming nurses, perform unit coordinator responsibilities and participate in clinical instruction programs.
• Triage psychiatric patients that present to the ED, complete medical screening examination forms, initiate admission paperwork, assist with insurance/pre-certification, obtain physician orders, give reports to the floor and document all pertinent information.
• Assist with transporting patients and the assessment and treatment of psychiatric nursing issues in the ED.
• Consult on managing disruptive behavior and restraint issues, assess patients for suicide and elopement risk, recommend proper levels of patient observation and provide discharge information.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Graduate from an accredited School of Professional Nursing (Diploma, ADN or BSN program)
• Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
• If assigned to ED Triage primarily, five years of nursing experience and three years of inpatient psych experience

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Physical Requirements:

• Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
• Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
• Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
• Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
• Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
• Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
