Position Availability Requirements
Must be able to provide a minimum of 2 days/week to be considered.
Position Summary
Contributes to the organization by working in the pre-operative area and PACU. Acts as the advocate for the patient while in these areas. The RN assures that quality care is administered.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Policies
- Performs according to compliance and other policies and procedures.
- Must maintain current RN licensing. Failure to do so will result in suspension, without pay, until renewed license is on file.
- Must maintain current basic CPR and ACLS certification.
Procedures
Pre-operatively
- Conducts pre-op interview with patient via phone call.
- Provides patient and family teaching regarding upcoming surgery.
- Assesses lab work and EKG, and acts on abnormal results.
On the day of surgery
- Identifies patient and assesses patient’s chart for completeness, establishing basic interventions.
- Reviews patient history, records baseline, assesses physical status.
- Checks medications ordered, administered, and effects noted.
- Establishes IV access.
- Informs surgeon or anesthesiologist of changes in patient status.
- Provides emotional support pre- and post-operatively.
- Assists patient to operative suite as needed.
- Completes pre-operative records.
Post-operatively
- Performs according to established post-operative guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Communicates effectively and maintains harmonious relationships.
- Assists with monitoring in the OR for local cases.
General Responsibilities
- Assist in improving staff teaching programs.
- Review policies and procedures annually.
- Attend continuing education courses as required.
- Provide a safe environment to prevent cross-infection.
- Assist in in-service training on fire safety, infection control, CPR, and medical education.
- Assist in cleaning and preparing rooms, supplies, and equipment.
- Assist in ordering supplies and participate in quality assurance programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED, Associates or Bachelors in Nursing
- Current RN license in Texas
- Preoperative/ASC experience preferred, with at least 1 year in PACU or critical care
