Job summary

Virginia Urology is seeking a Pre-Admission Testing Registered Nurse for our Stony Point location in Richmond, VA. You will perform pre-operative assessments, coordinate labs and tests, and educate patients on pre- and postoperative care to ensure safe perioperative experiences.

The role requires an RN licensed in Virginia with ACLS/CPR and at least 1 year in PAT/pre-op/post-op care. This is a full-time position offering comprehensive benefits and a supportive team environment.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Licensed in the State of Virginia or awaiting reciprocity.
  • CPR and ACLS certifications.
  • Registered Nurse with a minimum of 1 year experience in pre-admission testing, pre-operative, and/or post-operative care unit.

Overall Objective

Our Pre-Admission Testing Registered Nurse demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, and range of treatment. They are responsible for delivery of education in order to prepare the pre-operative patient for surgery and maintain an aseptic and safe environment in the Pre-Admissions Department. This role supports adult and geriatric populations.


Principal Activities And Expected End Results


  • Develops a plan of care that meets individual patient’s needs and follows established nursing standards of care/practice.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in this unit.

  • Uses critical thinking skills in the formulation and implementation of the patient’s plan of care. Records actions and patient responses.

  • Delivers care with respect to the individual’s spiritual and cultural needs.

  • Provides patient care in a professional and ethical manner. Demonstrates an understanding of and appropriately applies policies of VUSC.

  • Performs pre-operative assessment based on VUSC guidelines. This assessment will include any physical and psychological considerations and any special needs related to the patient that may impact delivery of care during their peri-operative course.

  • Obtains and documents patients’ past and present medical history/assessment. Including, but not limited to Allergies, Medications presently taking, (prescriptions, over the counter medications, as well as herbal/vitamin supplements), vital signs and past surgical procedures.

  • Determines appropriate pre-admission testing (labs, EKG/CXR) according to anesthesia guidelines.

  • Obtain labs and generate lab order. Perform EKG and send for reading.

  • Call patients after being scheduled for surgery, obtain a pre-health assessment to determine if patients need to be seen in a PAT appointment or if patient needs to be assessed by Anesthesiologist prior to surgery date.

  • Notify anesthesia of abnormal labs values.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to operate equipment in order to properly care for patients including but not limited to: Cardiac monitor, dinamapp, pulse oximeter, blood glucose monitor, defibrillator, external pacemaker, and EKG tracing.

  • Performs EKG if indicated and documents pertinent data prior to it being read.

  • Obtain/set up medical clearance for patients that are noted to need this after health assessment obtained.

  • Educates patients regarding any preps that may be necessary for their procedure.

  • Educates patients regarding pre-operative and post-operative routine and plan of care.

  • Educates patients regarding pre-operative and post-operative instructions applicable to their procedure.

  • Provides direction to other members of the healthcare team through delegation or as a resource person to ensure comprehensive and safe patient care.

  • Communicates effectively with anesthesia, supervisors, co-workers, physicians and other health care providers.

  • Advises and directs team members in the selection and preparation of routine supplies and equipment for patient care.

  • Review labs, EKG, and clearances prior to anesthesia.

  • See add-on patients as the need may arise.

  • Call patients for any additional information that may be needed prior to procedure.

  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of clinical excellence, operational effectiveness and patient-centered care.


Requirements

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience


  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Prior Work Experience

Acute care hospital experience in an ICU, ER or Med-Surg or high-volume surgical center with exposure to multiple specialties.


Physical Requirements


  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during surgical procedures and throughout the shift.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance, and move, position, or assist patients and equipment in accordance with safe patient handling guidelines.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, and twist while preparing rooms, positioning patients, and accessing supplies/equipment.

  • Manual dexterity to handle surgical instruments, operate equipment, chart electronically, and perform clinical tasks with precision.

  • Visual acuity to observe patient condition, read monitors, identify instruments, and maintain sterile field integrity.

  • Ability to hear and communicate effectively in a fast-paced procedural environment, including alarms, team instructions, and patient needs.

  • Ability to respond quickly in urgent or emergency situations and move between procedure rooms as needed.

  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.

  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, cleaning agents, and surgical smoke, using appropriate safety precautions.


Other Information

Other Job Functions Include:



  • Cleans equipment in accordance with established departmental practices.

  • Assists with orientation and clinical education of new personnel.

  • Provides patient education and documentation of understanding regarding tests, procedures, equipment and medications as well as, education necessary for the patient to meet continued health care needs.

  • Answers phone calls that secretary is unable to respond to or answer.

  • Trend/identify problems and look for solutions.


Exhibits strong initiative, personal accountability, and ability to independently identify and execute improvement opportunities.


This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, and will work Monday through Friday at our Stony Point location.
