Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • General Responsibilities:

    • Plan, implement, coordinate, evaluate, and promote continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.
    • Assess health status by interviewing patients regarding current status and medical history.
    • Collect and record nursing assessments and interventions.
    • Review and report results of health status assessments, physical examinations, laboratory data, radiographic data, and psychosocial assessments to the provider.
    • Assess patient/family needs and provide teaching and instructional materials.
    • Provide psychosocial support to patients and families.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality.
    • Prepare and administer therapies under physician direction and supervision.
    • Administer medications/blood products using correct dosage, route, time, and technique.
    • Assure pre-authorization and consent forms are obtained for therapies as applicable.
    • Facilitate dose modification by assessing patient, reviewing labs, consulting protocols, and consulting physicians.
    • Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central line catheter devices.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of patient care and treatments.
    • Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.
    • Maintain work environment and restock supply areas as needed.
    • Follow OSHA guidelines for handling cytotoxic agents and biohazardous waste.
    • Maintain disinfection protocols and equipment quality control standards.
    • Facilitate clinical operations and patient care, managing medication refill requests, assisting physicians with exams, and maintaining patient flow.
    • Facilitate and schedule consultations, diagnostic tests, referrals, and future appointments.
    • Triage patient phone calls and document relevant information.
    • Facilitate communication between patients/families and interdisciplinary teams, coordinating services related to patient care.
    • Assist patients in locating community resources.
    • Collaborate with clinical research and act as a resource to LPN/LVNs and medical assistants.
    • Provide nursing coverage for satellite offices as needed.
    • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current oncology nursing knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Job Qualifications:

    • Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education, BSN preferred.
    • RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing.
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    • 0-3 years nursing experience, preferably at least one year in oncology.
  • Working Conditions:

    • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and other conditions common to an oncology/hematology clinic environment.
    • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
    • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods.
    • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs.
    • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
