Qualifications

Dulaney Eye Institute is searching for a patient-focused, skilled PRN (two days per week on average) RN for our Pre-OP/PACU Unit. No nights, no weekends, no major holidays, in a team-oriented working environment where you are seen, heard, and respected, with clear career ladder opportunities.

The Pre-Op/PACU RN is responsible for patient safety and care in the pre-operative and post-operative areas. This position involves delivering individualized nursing care to patients before anesthesia and immediately after emergence from anesthesia for surgical procedures. Using current clinical knowledge and established nursing practices, the nurse performs interventions utilizing the nursing process, assessing individual patient needs and maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities

The PRE-OP/PACU RN must understand preoperative/postoperative equipment and policies related to:

  • Patient care monitor
  • Patient journey
  • Glucometer
  • Pregnancy testing devices
  • Medical gases
  • AED and defibrillator

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining electronic medical records and recognizing unusual perioperative events
  • Providing accurate preoperative instructions to patients
  • Providing customized discharge education and follow-up calls
  • Formulating patient-specific plans based on assessments and acting as the patient’s advocate
  • Applying perioperative and ophthalmic nursing principles, especially related to ophthalmic anesthesia and vision impairment
  • Administering medications safely, adhering to safe injection practices and policies on controlled substances
  • Participating in medication expiration checks
  • Maintaining supply inventory
  • Adhering to infection control policies
  • Familiarity with medical emergency preparedness policies

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse licensed in Maryland
  • BLS certification
  • ACLS certification
  • Over 2 years of RN experience, preferably with at least 1 year in a perioperative or sterile procedures setting
  • Knowledge of basic nursing performance standards
  • Understanding of operating room equipment such as microscopes, phacoemulsification machines, electrosurgical units, lasers, medical gases, and patient care monitors
  • Ability to document unusual operating room events narratively
  • Ability to assess patients' physical, educational, emotional, spiritual, and age-related needs
