A leading hospital in Michigan seeks an experienced Operating Room Registered Nurse to oversee patient care in surgical settings. This role includes duties such as assisting in surgeries, monitoring patients, and ensuring compliance with surgical standards. Ideal candidates will possess a current RN license and relevant certifications, with a strong focus on patient safety and aseptic technique.
POSITION SUMMARY: The OR RN is responsible for the patient throughout the operative process. Roles include circulating nurse, the PACU nurse, and the scrub nurse. This RN will care for the patient in the operating room, perform a pre-operative assessment, provide care to the patient, help protect the sterile field, transfer items from non-sterile to sterile field. They will oversee the OR process in the surgery suite, assisting in the surgery by helping with patient positioning and instrumentation. Nurses assess and treat the patient throughout the recovery process as well.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supports all hospital and nursing service policies. Interprets procedures, policies and objectives to staff, patients, and family as needed.
Is aware of established nursing standards for surgical nursing and evaluates nursing performance against these standards and takes corrective action as needed.
Sees that all patients admitted for surgery have had the prescribed tests performed and consents signed prior to undergoing any surgical procedure.
Visits both pre and postoperative patients as time allows.
Checks and accounts for all narcotics and barbiturates or any other medication used in the recovery room.
Keeps all pertinent reports and other data current and updated. Documents accurately and concisely.
Consults with OR Supervisor and C.R.N.A. as needed to resolve problems.
Identifies the specific needs of each patient age group and monitors and cares for appropriately.
Assists with orientation of new personal if needed
Transports patient to OR suite. Prepares or assists in preparation of patient for surgical procedure; i.e., prepping, catheterization, etc.
Gives direct nursing care and support to the patient according to their needs. Concern at all times with the patient’s safety, welfare and comfort.
Directs and coordinates activities within the operating room.
Is in a position to observe aseptic technique and must guard against any infractions.
Sees that the surgical team is supplied with every necessary item to perform the operation efficiently, using equipment and supplies economically and conservatively.
Certifies the correctness of the sponge count along with the scrub nurse.
Assist any member of the surgical team in any manner in which she/he is qualified. Assists anesthetist during induction period as needed.
Prepares specimens for transport to lab.
Serves as communications liaison to areas outside the OR suite as designated.
Assures that all persons entering OR suite are properly clothed.
Keeps self-skills up to date.
Must be cross trained to work in the Recovery Room.
Takes call when scheduled. Available for after hours or emergency surgeries. On-call in the event of a hospital disaster or emergency.
Has training in CPR, ACLS, and PALS and keeps certifications updated as required.
Knows where all equipment is located and how to operate it.
Participates in in-service for self-development. Attends all staff meetings when able. Reads minutes for meetings to keep updated if unable to attend.
Interacts with patients, families, physicians, nurses and other OR personnel.
Provides technical information and assistance to medical staff and all outside physicians who provide surgical services.
Participates in Quality Improvement Program.
Demonstrate appropriateness in meeting objectives in age-specifics.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Graduate from an approved school of professional nursing.
RN with a current license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Michigan.
BLS, ACLS and PALS certified.
Preferred one-year minimum experience in Operating Room.
Must take on-call rotation.
Flexible. Willing and able to work a variety of hours when needed.
Demonstrates knowledge and competence in surgical and ancillary procedures and techniques.
Complete understanding and compliance with all HIPAA regulations.
Satisfactory health as evidenced by a physical exam.
