Job Summary

The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room is responsible for providing skilled perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. This role involves assessing patient needs, maintaining sterile fields, administering medications, collaborating with the surgical team, and ensuring patient safety throughout the surgical process. The nurse must demonstrate excellent communication, multitasking, and prioritization skills to manage competing demands in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Conduct interactions with patients, visitors, and staff in a friendly, courteous, and respectful manner.
• Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality while promoting awareness.
• Ensure a clean, safe, and healthy hospital environment to minimize risks and injuries.
• Respond immediately and appropriately to emergency situations.
• Comply with hospital attendance, tardiness policies, and mandatory training requirements.
• Practice and enforce hand hygiene compliance among all employees with direct patient contact.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions and patient care plans.

• Maintain sterile fields and oversee sterilization and handling of supplies and instruments.
• Verify patient identity, consent, procedure, and surgical site prior to surgery.
• Apply aseptic principles and prepare necessary supplies, equipment, and instrumentation for surgeries.
• Use proper body mechanics during patient positioning and transfer.
• Ensure accuracy of sponge, needle, and instrument counts and communicate results to the surgeon.
• Handle and label specimens and cultures according to policy.

Required Skills & Certifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification upon hire or within 60 days.
• Operating Room nursing experience; Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) strongly preferred.
• Ability to function effectively in an environment with competing priorities.
• Excellent communication and multitasking skills.

Preferred Skills & Certifications

• CNOR certification.
• Experience in perioperative nursing.
