Job summary

Theuniversityunion is seeking a Licensed Nurse/Registered Nurse to support the Director of Nursing in delivering high-quality care at our Princeton, WV facility. This hourly role requires vigilant medication administration, supervision of direct care staff, and adherence to state and federal regulations to ensure resident safety and well-being.

Qualifications

  • Is a graduate of an accredited school of nursing for professional registered or practical nurses.
  • Possesses a current licensed to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the nursing licensed boards of the State of West Virginia.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and records medications and/or treatments as prescribed by the physician and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assures that controlled substances are handled in the manner prescribed by law and the facility policies and verifies the accuracy of all related records for use and accountability.
  • Supervises the direct care staff and the activities related to nursing care in the assigned primary care unit during his/her tour of duty.
  • Assures that each resident receives all care and services in accordance with the medical and interdisciplinary plan of care as a means of reaching the highest practicable level of functioning in the performance of activities of daily living.
  • Participates in the completion of direct resident care on the shift to which assigned within the scope of nursing licensure and training.
  • Is familiar with the rules, regulations and standards of care in the long-term care setting and assures that the rules are followed on his/her tour of duty.
  • Is responsible for maintaining safe and accurate distribution of medications and/or treatments and all related record keeping in accordance with applicable State and Federal laws and regulations.
  • May serve as the supervisor on duty in the absence of the departmental supervisor.
  • Assists in acquiring call-in replacements, and unit coverage for the nursing unit as necessary.
  • Performs employee evaluations for the Registered Long Term Care Nursing Assistants (RLTCNA) under his/her supervision as assigned.
  • Participates in the recruitment, hiring, training/ education, lay-off, evaluation, and discipline of the unit personnel.
  • Attends scheduled meetings and educational programs as required.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing to assure the continuity of resident care between shift personnel in a timely and up-to-date manner using tools such as the 24-Hour Report.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Care Coordinator in the assessment and development of the resident plan of care.
  • Maintains the medical record according to the facility policies and procedures and preserves confidentiality of all related information.
  • Takes appropriate action in the event of an emergency clinical situation such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or other life-threatening event then confers immediately with the registered nurse in charge for further instructions.
  • Assures that all supplies are promptly charged to the appropriate resident where applicable.
  • Communicates and collaborates with members of the health care team as necessary.
  • Participates actively in the quality assurance and improvement process to achieve customer-oriented delivery of care and services according to quality standards.
  • Facilitates open lines of communication between the management team and members of the staff.
  • Acts as liaison between the facility, family members, visitors and the public in a competent and confidential manner.
  • Assumes responsibility as the manager in charge in the absence of a member of the Administrator or a senior member of the management team.
  • Required to assist physician in resident rounds.
  • Is responsible for assuring resident safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Description

The Licensed Nurse/Registered Nurse assists the Director of Nursing Services in executing the responsibilities for the operation of the nursing unit during the shift to which assigned in a manner which is consistent with the facility mission and principles that assure the highest practical level of quality care and services to our residents and other customers.

Reports To: Director of Nursing

Essential Job Functions:

Qualifications:

Working Conditions:
  1. Works in well- lighted , well-ventilated areas.
  2. Subject to frequent interruptions, answers telephone and call lights as necessary.
  3. Relates to residents, family members, visitors, the public and personnel under varying conditions.
  4. May be called upon to handle emergencies.
  5. May be requested to participate at meetings and/or seminars away from the facility that could involve travel.
  6. Will be subject to handling of infectious waste.
Work Schedule:
  1. This is an hourly position.
  2. Work hours may vary during the day, evening, or night shift as needed.
  3. May be required to work overtime to assure the continuity of safety in resident care services.
Physical Requirements:
  1. May be required to lift residents, supplies, medical equipment, and push medication carts.
  2. Must be in good general health and able to cope with the mental and emotional stress from the position.
  3. Lift over 50lbs: (Frequently lifting over 50 pounds when assisting in resident transfer. Occasionally may utilize the Hoyer lift when dealing with large or awkward-sized residents).
  4. Reach above shoulder height: (Occasionally may occur when reaching for medical Charts on shelves).
  5. Reach at shoulder height: (Constantly required when administering medication, taking vital signs, and providing care for the elderly).
  6. Reach below shoulder height: (Occasionally may occur when administering medication to residents who are bedridden.
  7. Push/Pull: (Occasionally may occur when using medications or treatment cart weighing approximately 200 pounds, 5-15lbs. Resistance; typically roles easily over tile).
Hand Manipulation:
  1. Grasping: (Frequently grasping pen/pencil when documenting information into Medical Charts.
  2. Handling: (Constantly handling pen/pencil, papers, medical equipment; i.e. Stethoscope, thermometer, medications, syringes, etc.)
  3. Torquing: Not required
  4. Fingering: (If facility implements the use of a computer, may occasionally be required to use a telephone).
  5. Controls & Equipment: (Hoyer lift (hydraulic system), splints, trap, wheelchair, Transfer belt, walkers, canes, suction machines, TENS unit. May need to move bed (200lbs), Geri chair, electronic thermometers).
Other Physical Considerations:
  1. Twisting: ( Occasionally may occur when providing medical care to bedridden residents, or assisting in transfer).
  2. Bending: (Frequently required when providing medical care to bedridden residents, or assisting in transfer).
