Job summary

Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD is seeking Registered Nurses for NICU positions to care for premature and term newborns in a high-acuity unit. Shifts include 630am-7pm or 630pm-7am with as-needed scheduling.

The NICU emphasizes collaboration with therapy teams, strict NEC protocols, and advanced neonatal procedures to ensure the best outcomes for our tiniest patients. ASN is required; BSN preferred.

Qualifications

• ASN required; BSN preferred.
• Minimum of one year of hospital NICU or Special Care Nursery experience preferred.
• Maryland RN license with Compact requirements when applicable; primary source verification per Maryland Board of Nursing.

Responsibilities

• Provide resuscitation and respiratory support, including CPAP and ventilator care.
• Place and maintain umbilical lines and deliver IV therapy and antibiotic management.
• Support nutrition through TPN, lipids, and enteral feeding.
• Collaborate with therapy teams to support newborns' needs.
• Follow NEC prevention protocols and participate in NEC management.
• Collect specimens for central lines and capillary/venous needs.
• Perform advanced procedures such as lumbar punctures and phototherapy as required.

Description

Registered Nurse- NICU

As Needed- 630am - 7pm or 630pm - 7am

The Meritus NICU is seeking skilled and compassionate nurses to join our team and provide exceptional care for premature and term newborns. Our unit is fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including cardiac monitors, phototherapy lights, IV infusion pumps, warming units, CPAP generators, ventilators, and more! We ensure that we can offer the best care possible to our tiniest patients.

What We Do:
We care for premature newborns (as early as 32 weeks gestation and/or 1500 grams) and term newborns, along with newborns transferred from higher-level centers. Each day is an opportunity to provide specialized, life-saving care in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Key Nursing Skills and Responsibilities:

• Resuscitation & Respiratory Support: Provide ventilator care, CPAP, oxyhood, HFNC, and more.
• Umbilical Line Placement & Maintenance: Ensure safe and effective placement and ongoing care.
• IV & Antibiotic Therapy: Administer IV therapy, antibiotics, glucose management, and fluid maintenance.
• Nutritional Support: Manage TPN, lipids, gut priming, and enteral feeding.
• Collaboration: Work closely with speech and physical therapy teams to support the needs of our newborns.
• NEC Prevention & Protocols: Follow strict protocols for the prevention and management of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC).
• Specimen Collection: Collect specimens for central lines, venous, and capillary needs.
• Advanced Procedures: Perform lumbar punctures and hyperbilirubinemia management (single, double, and triple phototherapy).

Requirements:

Education - ASN required. BSN Preferred.

Experience - Minimum of one year of experience in a hospital setting required. Prior NICU or Special Care Nursery experience strongly preferred.

Licensure/Certification - Specialty certification recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program™ preferred. Current license to practice as Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland, or if resident of a state that participates in Nurse Multi-State Compact agreement, holds Registered Nurse License from that state that is designated as "Compact" or "Multi-State Privilege" using primary source verification and provides additional documentation as required by the Maryland Board of Nursing. RN License from a compact state with a designation of "Single State" does not meet the requirement and nurse must obtain a Maryland license. Specialty certification preferred. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities - Ability to apply the standards of professional nursing practice with compassion and empathy. Basic computer skills required. Must possess a high level of organization and communication skills.
