UNC Youth Behavioral Health Facility is hiring New Grad Nurses to join our team!

Seeking nursing graduates to start Fall 2025

To qualify for the UNC Medical Center (YBH is part of UNC Medical Center) New Graduate Residency program, candidates must be in their final semester of nursing school or have recently graduated within the past 12 months of the anticipated start date, and have worked as an RN for less than 6 months. The program supports the transition from academia to practice, providing mentored clinical relationships and professional development. Applicants must pass the NCLEX exam and be licensed RNs prior to the first day of employment.

We are seeking a New Graduate RN to work on a multidisciplinary team, primarily on the Cardinal Unit, a 14-bed inpatient unit dedicated to psychiatric care for adolescents aged 12 to 15 requiring acute stabilization. The unit addresses urgent mental health needs and sets a foundation for long-term recovery.

Youth Behavioral Health Hospital (YBH) is a 54-bed, 24-hour, locked psychiatric facility in Butner, North Carolina. It emphasizes trauma-informed, milieu-based, therapeutic care for patients with complex histories, including aggression and psychosis. The staff is cross-trained across units to serve children and adolescents with various mental health diagnoses, dual diagnoses, substance misuse, and complex behaviors, including Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

This full-time position offers 36 hours per week, 12-hour day shifts, and full benefits. It qualifies for the UNC Hospitals New Grad RN Incentive Program, which includes up to $15,000 in commitment incentives or $25,000 in tuition loan forgiveness, plus up to $10,000 in relocation assistance based on location. Responsibilities
  • Education: Identify and meet learning needs, participate in educational programs, assess readiness to learn, and use patient education materials.
  • Evaluation of Care: Set patient outcomes, revise care plans, participate in interdisciplinary discussions, and communicate effectively to ensure continuity of care.
  • Implementation: Provide competent care for patients with complex issues, perform bedside testing, follow standards and policies, organize care, and consult resources as needed.
  • Leadership: Develop professional goals, collaborate across departments, participate in performance improvement, promote cost-effective care, and ensure safety.
  • Patient Assessment: Recognize data from complex situations, prioritize care, and develop relationships with families to support advocacy.
  • Planning: Collaborate with patients and families, utilize multidisciplinary resources, and address cultural considerations.
  • Research: Engage with current research, bring ideas for practice improvement.
Other Information

Education Requirements: Graduation from a nursing school; if hired after Jan 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years and obtain a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nursing within seven years.

Licensure/Certification: RN license in North Carolina, BLS certification.
