Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA is seeking a Registered Nurse for a 26-bed Medical Step Down Unit. The role provides care to high-acuity patients requiring continuous monitoring, with emphasis on assessment, planning, and evaluation of care across all ages.

Candidates should have a State Board of Nursing approved program and an active VA RN license or eligibility. AHA BLS-HCP certification is required, and ACLS/PALS/NRP may be needed based on area. Benefits and sign-on are offered.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a State Board of Nursing approved program.
• Current Virginia RN license or eligibility to obtain licensure.
• AHA BLS-HCP certification.
• IT literacy and EMR experience; ability to educate patients.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimal outcomes for all ages.
• Document age-specific assessments and care in the EMR.
• Collaborate with patients, families and interdisciplinary teams to adjust care plans.
• Administer treatments and medications accurately and document care.
• Identify and address education needs for patients and families.
• Participate in performance improvement and quality initiatives.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with regulatory standards.

Employment Status: Full time Shift: Day/Evening/Night (United States of America) Facility: 1906 Belleview Ave SE - Roanoke Requisition Number: R163072 RN - Medical Step Down Unit (Open) How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare: Sign on Bonus 26-bed, high-acuity progressive care unit caring for complex patients who require continuous monitoring and frequent clinical intervention. Nurses practice in a fast-paced environment that demands strong assessment skills, critical thinking, and effective interdisciplinary collaboration. The RN provides professional nursing care to patients across all age groups, supporting patient-centered care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. This role collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure safe, effective, and high-quality patient outcomes. The RN Provides individualized patient care and coordinates care delivery for patients of all ages.

• Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimal outcomes.
• Completes and documents age-specific assessments to support development of care plans.
• Collaborates with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams to develop and adjust care plans.
• Administers treatments and medications accurately and documents care in electronic medical records.
• Identifies and addresses patient and family education needs.
• Participates in performance improvement and quality initiatives.
• Advocates for patients and supports their rights and psychosocial needs.
• Applies knowledge of growth and development to provide age-appropriate care.
• Demonstrates clinical expertise in dynamic and changing care environments.
• Implements strategies to improve patient outcomes and resource utilization.
• Serves as a role model and supports development of peers and team members.
• Manages resources, prioritizes tasks, and adapts to changing patient care needs.
• Supports orientation and training of new employees.

What We Require:

• Education: Graduate of a State Board of Nursing approved program required.
• Experience: None.
• Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Current Registered Nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia required or eligibility to obtain licensure required.
• Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required.
• Additional certifications such as ACLS, PALS, or NRP may be required based on assigned work area.
• Other Minimum Qualifications: Keyboarding skills and computer literacy required, including use of electronic medical records. For Behavioral Health roles, must demonstrate ability to safely manage disruptive or potentially violent patients.

Compensation Range: $33.52 - $50.28 Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
