Job description

Purpose of Job:


This position is responsible for delivering individualized patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Care and Practice as defined by Ridgeview Medical Center, the Minnesota Nurse Practice Standards Act, and the ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice.


Job Functions:


  1. Assess patient health problems and needs, and develop, implement, and evaluate patient care plans accordingly.
  2. Provide nursing care.
  3. Advise and educate patients, family members, and significant others on health maintenance and disease prevention.
  4. Document and maintain accurate medical records and reports.
  5. Participate in quality improvement activities relevant to the position.
  6. Serve as a patient advocate by seeking appropriate community resources to meet patient needs.
  7. Engage with and contribute to the professional development of peers, other healthcare providers, and colleagues to enhance nursing practice.
  8. Demonstrate competencies in the specialty area of practice.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

When functioning as a Charge Nurse:

  1. Manage patient flow through inpatient and/or outpatient departments.
  2. Assign resources and arrange staffing to ensure safe patient care.
  3. Provide work direction and address issues during the shift.
  4. Act as a liaison between staff, patients, and physicians.
  5. Demonstrate unit-specific Charge Nurse competencies.
  6. Review Physician orders.

Minimum Education/Work Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


  • Demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Make independent decisions using good critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Work and multitask effectively in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.
  • Respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal, to perform job functions.

License/Certifications:


  • Current professional nurse licensure in Minnesota or, if licensed elsewhere, a permit from the Minnesota Board of Nursing while the license application is in process.
  • BLS Certification.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
  • Experience in Medical-Surgical nursing.
  • Oncology certification.
