Overview

RN - Med Surg ICU – 12 bed ICU with a primary medical population and a variety of complex medical and pulmonary conditions. Patients are co-managed by hospitalist and critical care medicine. The unit provides ICU level care for patients from cardiology and surgical service lines and offers CRRT and targeted temperature management.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimum outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.
  • Performs age-specific admission and ongoing assessments, documents them, and uses them to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborates with health care team, patients, and families to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care; revises the plan as patient status changes.
  • Administers and documents treatments and medications for patients of all ages using automated systems and electronic medical records.
  • Identifies patient/family educational needs, incorporates them into the plan of care, and documents appropriately.
  • Contributes to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities.
  • Represents the role of patient advocate and provides psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
  • Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support evidenced-based, quality patient care and performance improvement.
  • Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption, and improve patient outcomes.
  • Functions as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians. Manages resources, establishes priorities, and adapts the environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Completes manager/director predetermined projects within the specified time frame and guidelines.
  • Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution of patient and personnel situations in the work area.
  • Takes an active role in orienting new employees.
  • Provides feedback to staff and documents accordingly.
  • Provides input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating in unit, hospital, and/or system activities that facilitate staff participation and input in decision making.
  • Assists with providing education activities for the unit/department.
What We Require

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or an approved nursing program eligible to sit for the Virginia RN licensure examination.

Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.

Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required. May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).
