Job description

Work Unit Overview: A Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides nursing and nursing-related services to residents consistent with each resident's comprehensive assessment and plan of care. All resident care is provided in a manner that meets the resident's physical, mental, and psychosocial needs, enabling the individual to attain or maintain the highest practicable level of functioning. Provides supervision of healthcare personnel in maintaining a "homelike" environment, protects resident rights, and assists individuals to maintain independence and control as much as possible.

Job Summary: The RN or LPN assesses patient health problems and needs, develops and implements nursing care plans, and maintains medical records. Duties include administering nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients. May advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention or provide case management. An RN/LPN oversees the work of other healthcare personnel as required.

  • Direct or supervise nursing assistants/aides and other healthcare personnel to ensure proper performance according to standards and policies. May supervise a specific unit.
  • Coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, modifying treatment plans as needed.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests; monitor all aspects of patient care including diet and physical activity.
  • Record and report symptoms or changes in patient conditions, maintaining accurate reports and records.
  • Instruct individuals and families on health topics, develop health improvement programs.

Administer prescribed medications, start IV fluids, record vital signs, transcribe physician orders, and observe/report patient symptoms.

  • Provide basic patient care such as taking temperatures, dressing wounds, and assisting with daily activities.
  • Assist physicians or other RNs in examinations and procedures; perform procedures like catheterizations and dressing changes.
  • Answer patient calls and determine assistance needed.
  • Measure and record vital signs.

Work as part of a healthcare team to assess needs, plan, and implement care. Collect samples for testing, communicate with other facilities, and prepare patients for examinations.

  • Assemble and use medical equipment.
  • Assist in various care settings including maternal/child, medical-surgical, outpatient, and outreach services.
  • Comply with all relevant policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include graduation from an accredited nursing program (preferred for RN), 1-2 years of acute care experience, valid Montana RN or LPN license, and current CPR certification. Must have a clean court record free of abuse, neglect, or mistreatment allegations, pass a background check, and maintain drug-free workplace standards.

This position requires knowledge of nursing theory and practice, hospital rules, medical vocabulary, supplies, and equipment. Also required are knowledge of patient rights, confidentiality, infection control, emergency procedures (including CPR), medication administration, and behavioral health assessment. Physical ability to perform assessments, draw blood, and work under strain is necessary. Ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively, and maintain confidentiality is essential.
