Job summary

Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA seeks a full-time Registered Nurse for a 20-bed telemetry PCU specializing in general and bariatric surgery with ERAS care. The unit serves neuro/trauma, hospitalist/medicine, and urology patients as needed.

The role requires completing nursing assessments, coordinating care, and documenting in EPIC, while contributing to patient advocacy and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of school of professional nursing or eligible to sit VA licensure exam.
  • Virginia RN licensure in good standing or eligibility.
  • AHA BLS-HCP required; ACLS/PALS/NRP may be required by unit.
  • Computer skills for Electronic Medical Records (EPIC).

Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care for all ages as appropriate to service area.
  • Perform age-specific admission assessments and develop a care plan.
  • Collaborate with care team to develop and revise age-appropriate interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Administer and document treatments/medications using EPIC and other systems.
  • Educate patients and families; document education provided.
  • Support performance improvement activities and act as a patient advocate.

20 bed telemetry PCU specializes in the care and management of all general and bariatric surgery patients. This unit houses the majority of Enhanced Recovery (ERAS) patients. They also serves as the alternate unit for neuro/trauma surgery patients, hospitalist/medicine patients, and urology/other surgery patients.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.
  • Age specific admission and ongoing assessments are completed, documented and used to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborates with members of the health care team/patient/family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care. Revises plan according to changes in patient status.
  • Treatments and medications for patients of all ages are accurately administered and documented utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • Patient/family (caregiver) educational needs are identified in a timely manner, incorporated into the plan of care, implemented and documented appropriately.
  • Contributes to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities.
  • Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patient's rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
  • Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support (direct/indirect) evidenced based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
  • Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes.
  • Functions as role model for clinical practice to coworker, students, and physicians. Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Completes manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frame and according to pre-established guidelines.
  • Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.
  • Takes an active role in the orientation of new employees.
  • Provides feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
  • Provides input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and/or system activities which facilitates staff participation/input in decision making.
  • Assists with providing education activities for unit/department.
What We Require
  • Education: Graduate of school of professional nursing of an accredited college or graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
  • Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed as Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required. May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
  • Other: Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).
Compensation Range

$33.52 - $50.28 Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
