Job summary

Presbyterian Healthcare Services seeks a perioperative nurse to provide direct patient care during surgical procedures and collaborate with the surgical team for safe, high-quality outcomes.

Qualified candidates hold an ADN or higher, a current NM RN license (or compact state), and BLS; ACLS and PALS certifications are preferred. The role includes varied shifts with growth and strong benefits in a supportive NM system.

Qualifications

  • Degree from an accredited nursing program.
  • Minimum ADN required.
  • Current New Mexico RN license or Compact State license.
  • BLS certification required for all RN roles.
  • ACLS certification for specified perioperative areas.
  • PALS certification for pediatric and related areas.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee perioperative patient care, directing and delegating to surgical team members based on patient needs and procedure complexity.
  • Maintain clinical competency in perioperative nursing and adjust care plans with input from surgeons and anesthesia providers.
  • Coordinate patient care with families, surgeons, anesthesia, and the interdisciplinary team throughout the perioperative continuum.
  • Provide education, support and advocacy for patients and families before, during and after surgery.
  • Ensure informed consent, rights, and safety standards are communicated and upheld.
  • Assess educational needs and deliver preoperative and postoperative instruction to promote safety and recovery.
  • Maintain knowledge of perioperative standards and regulatory requirements to support quality outcomes.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating room equipment and sterile technique and participate in problem solving.

Compensation Pay Range: Minimum Offer $39.69, Maximum Offer $53.55

Provides direct perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures, utilizing the nursing process and evidence-based practice standards. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary surgical team to ensure patient safety, efficient workflow, and high-quality outcomes throughout the perioperative experience.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as a clinical resource by overseeing perioperative patient care, directing and delegating responsibilities to surgical team members based on patient needs, procedure complexity, staff competencies, and anticipated surgical requirements.
  • Maintains clinical competency in the delivery of perioperative nursing care; evaluates patient outcomes, collaborates with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and other specialists, and adjusts care plans as needed to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Coordinates patient care through collaboration with patients, families, surgeons, anesthesia personnel, and interdisciplinary team members throughout the perioperative continuum.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of perioperative nursing principles and provides education, support, and advocacy for patients and their families before, during, and after surgical procedures.
  • Ensures patients understand their rights and responsibilities, advance directives, and informed consent requirements in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Assesses patient and family educational needs and provides preoperative and postoperative instruction to promote understanding, safety, and recovery.
  • Maintains current knowledge of perioperative nursing standards, evidence-based practices, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies to support quality patient care and surgical outcomes.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the operation, troubleshooting, and safe use of surgical equipment, instrumentation, and technology utilized in the operating room.
  • Communicates effectively with members of the surgical team and other disciplines, actively participating in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and efforts to maintain a collaborative, patient-focused environment.
  • Participates in on-call responsibilities and responds appropriately to urgent, emergent, and trauma surgical procedures as required.
  • Maintains competency in a variety of surgical specialties and procedures, including preoperative assessment, intraoperative patient management, aseptic technique, patient positioning, specimen handling, and postoperative care coordination.
  • Assists in maintaining compliance with accreditation, infection prevention, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Degree from an accredited nursing program (approval may be granted by the system CNO if program is under conditional status)
  • Minimum Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required
  • Current New Mexico RN license or Compact State RN license required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required for all RN roles (AHA, ASHI, or American Red Cross)
  • ACLS: Emergency Department, Critical Care, Cardiovascular Lab, GI Lab, Interventional Radiology, Progressive Care, Surgical Services (Pre-Op and PACU)
  • PALS: Pediatrics/Children's Services, Cardiovascular Lab, Emergency Department, GI Lab, Interventional Radiology, Surgical Services (Pre-Op and PACU)
