The Medical Surgical unit, also known as Med-Surg, is a specialty unit that makes up the foundation of nursing. The Medical Surgical unit at Mercy South manages acute medical surgical patients with a wide range of diagnoses and care needs. This unit cares for patients preparing for or recovering from medical and surgical interventions, including care for illnesses such as pneumonia and sepsis, as well as pre and post-operative management of pain, wound care, and monitoring for complications post-procedure. The Med-Surg unit also manages chronic conditions such as diabetes, COPD, and chronic kidney disease. Service lines include oncology, nephrology, urology, gastroenterology, and many more. Given the generalized nature of the Med-Surg unit and the variation in patient conditions, the acuity of patients varies.
