Job summary

UW Health University Hospital in Madison, WI, is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) to join the 28-bed Acute Care General Surgery unit. You will provide postoperative care to patients undergoing complex abdominal surgeries and collaborate with various surgical teams to ensure optimal outcomes.

You will work an evening/night shift (90% FTE) with every third weekend rotation and some holidays, based on department needs.

Qualifications

• BSN preferred.
• Six months nursing experience in inpatient units or current UW Health Nurse Residency Program completion.
• eICU: Two years of nursing experience required.
• Licensed RN in WI or compact licensure required.
• Current CPR/BLS Certification required.
• Relevant certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Join a team delivering postoperative care to high-acuity general surgery patients on a 28-bed Acute Care General Surgery unit.
• Provide postoperative care for complex abdominal surgeries (esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts).
• Manage surgical drains, NG tubes, enteral nutrition, wound care, epidural and PCA pain pumps, and stoma care.
• Collaborate with general, minimally invasive, emergency, and oncologic surgery teams and wound/ostomy RNs.
• Participate in continuing education, mentorship, quality improvement, and practice changes.

Work Schedule

90% FTE, evening/night shift. Every third weekend rotation and some holiday's required. Hours are based off the operational needs of the department. You will work at University Hospital in Madison, WI.

Registered Nurse (RN) to:

• Join a team of remarkable nurses that use compassion and teamwork to care for high acuity general care level patients on the 28 bed Acute Care General Surgery unit.
• Provide post-operative care to patients undergoing complex abdominal surgeries involving the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas (Whipple procedure), gallbladder, and bile ducts.
• Be part of a team of nurses that are skilled in providing post-operative surgical care for acutely ill patients. Become an expert in management of surgical drains, nasogastric tube placement, administering enteral nutrition, complex wound care with use of would vacs, epidural and PCA pain pump management, and stoma care.
• Collaborate with multiple surgical services including general surgery, minimally invasive surgery, emergency surgery, and surgical oncology as well as specialty certified Wound and Ostomy RNs.
• Work in a setting that fosters a culture of professional development through continuing education, support for professional certifications, and mentorship.
• Be involved in cutting edge, evidence-based therapies and research studies to improve patient outcomes.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and lead practice change.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) Preferred

Work Experience

• Inpatient Units and Central Float (Adult & Pediatric), Venous Access Team (VAT), Radiology, Hemodialysis, Cardiovascular Laboratory: Six (6) months nursing experience or current participant in UW Health's Nurse Residency Program with successful completion of the Nurse Residency Orientation on unit/similar unit. Required
• eICU: Two (2) years of nursing experience Required
• Relevant RN Experience Preferred

Licenses & Certifications

• Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of WI or holds a license issued by a jurisdiction that has adopted the nurse licensure compact Required
• Current CPR/BLS Certification Required
• Relevant Certification Preferred
