Qualifications

  • Valid RN license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN).
  • Valid Healthcare Provider level Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate from the American Heart Association.
  • Six months of full-time equivalent experience as a licensed RN, including administering vaccines and/or STI/HIV testing.
  • Master's degree in Nursing encouraged; MS Office and EMR experience a plus.
  • Ability to work 30+ hours per week; willingness to cover varying shifts and travel throughout the County.

Job description

The Department of Public Health (DPH), Communicable Disease Section, is seeking Registered Nurses II- Per Diem* who will provide support to the Immunizations Mobile Vaccine Team (MVT) or the Wellness on Wheels (WOW) Project.

Immunizations Mobile Vaccine Team (MVT)

RN IIs will administer routine immunizations to eligible children, adolescents, and adults in accordance with established immunization schedules. These services are provided through school-based clinics and community mobile/pop-up events throughout the county. Responsibilities include coordinating directly with schools to schedule clinics, ensuring proper consent and eligibility documentation, recording doses in the state immunization registry (CAIR2), and notifying primary care providers when applicable. RN IIs will assist with event setup and teardown, maintain vaccine inventory—including temperature tracking—and prepare necessary supplies. Additional duties include providing vaccine education to parents, students, and school staff and distributing Vaccines for Children (VFC) materials. RN IIs may also support other Immunization Program activities such as Perinatal Hepatitis B case management, educational sessions, and other program needs. RN IIs assigned to the MVT report to the Immunization Program Coordinator.

Wellness on Wheels (WOW) Project

Under the WOW Project, RN IIs will provide mobile clinical services across the county, including STI/HIV testing, risk assessments, specimen collection, and field-based treatment administration. Nurses will help develop standard practices, train staff, and ensure compliance with STI/HIV testing protocols. Additional responsibilities include maintaining detailed clinical records, coordinating with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, supporting emergency response efforts during outbreaks, and providing coverage for Public Health Clinic Nurses as needed. RN IIs assigned to WOW report to the Supervising Public Health Nurse.

Incumbents selected for these per diem positions will typically work close to full-time hours, averaging thirty (30) to forty (40) hours per week.

DEPARMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH - COMMUNICABLE DISEASE SECTION

The Communicable Disease Section (CDS) performs disease surveillance, implements infection control measures, and provides education designed to reduce or manage the rate of infectious diseases that are consistent with California law. CDS provides a wide range of personalized services working directly with San Bernardino County residents who have communicable disease conditions and referring them to health care providers. CDS also works with schools and health care providers to boost immunization coverage for all ages.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Appointment/Per Diem: Positions are in the Unclassified Service and serve at the discretion of the appointing authority. Per Diem positions participate in the County's PST Deferred Compensation Plan and do not earn any other benefits.

Per Diem: Per Diem Nurses are not regular positions within the County, and there should be no expectation of continued employment or guaranteed hours. Working as a Per Diem Nurse does not preclude you from applying and competing for regular nursing positions within the County. (Refer to the San Bernardino County website for current open recruitments.)

Shift Availability: Positions require working various shifts; therefore, candidates must indicate availability for all shifts to be considered. Rotating weekend and holiday coverage may be required.

Work Schedule: Incumbents selected for these positions will be required to work at a minimum thirty (30) hours per week.

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation.

Applicants must meet all of the following licensure/certification requirements:
  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN)
  • Valid Healthcare Provider level Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate (Course Completion Card) issued by the American Heart Association.

Experience: Six (6) months of full-time equivalent experience performing duties as a licensed RN, including administering vaccines and/or STI/HIV testing.
