Santa Paula Hospital offers a comprehensive list of inpatient and outpatient services and full-service departments for diagnostic procedure, treatment, aftercare, and ongoing care.

Position

The Ventura County Health Care Agency is seeking experienced Registered Nurses for the Float Unit to provide staffing support in the Medical Surgical, Telemetry, and Critical Care specialty areas at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) and/or Santa Paula Hospital. The Registered Nurse II is the experienced-level classification in professional nursing and performs the full range of nursing duties while exercising independent clinical judgment within established nursing standards, procedures, and physician orders. Incumbents are expected to work at the full scope of their licensure, applying intermediate assessment skills, sound clinical decision-making, and adherence to patient privacy, confidentiality, and security guidelines. As experience increases, they are expected to perform their duties with a decreasing amount of supervision.

Ideal Candidate
  • Compassionate and clinically proficient Registered Nurse with recent acute care hospital experience.
  • Strong assessment, critical thinking, and patient care skills with thorough knowledge of professional nursing practices, medications, medical terminology, and hospital procedures.
  • Effectively plans, implements, evaluates, and documents patient care; monitors patient conditions; administers treatments and medications; and collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality patient outcomes.
  • Prioritizes responsibilities in a fast‑paced environment, exercises sound clinical judgment, maintains patient confidentiality, communicates effectively, and establishes positive relationships with patients, families, and staff.
  • Supports training of new and ancillary personnel, maintains required certifications, and adapts to varying assignments, departments, and shifts while consistently providing safe, patient-centered care.
Float Pool Assignments
  • Med Surg/Tele Float Pool: Medical/Surgery (MS3), Telemetry Units (MS1 & ICU1) & admitted patients holding in ED (ED holds)
  • Critical Care Float Pool: Intensive Care Unit, DOU, PACU, IR, admitted patients holding in ED (ED holds)
Compensation & Benefits
  • Registered Nurse II ($54.70 - $65.42 per hour)
  • Educational/Bilingual Incentive: 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree; bilingual incentives may apply.
  • Certification Pay: $0.813 per hour per qualified certification (up to 5); one national certification may be paid at $2.00 per hour.
  • Continuous County Service Incentive Pay: 1% for 7 years, 1.25% for 12 years and 1.5% for 17 years.
  • Float Nurse Premium Pay: $3.50 per hour.
  • Flexible Credit Allowance: biweekly contribution toward medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from authorized plans.
  • Pension Plan: County defined benefit pension; “vested” after 5 years of retirement service credit.
  • Holidays: 13 paid days per year including one floating holiday.
  • Additional Benefits: Tuition Reimbursement, Disability Plans, Employee Assistance Program, Life Insurance, Wellness Program.
  • Per Diem Registered Nurse II ($55.42 - $73.14 per hour)
  • Educational/Bilingual Incentive: Additional $1.25 or $1.75 based on completion of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • Certification Pay: $0.813 per hour per qualified certification (up to 5).
  • Evening Shift Differential: 7.5%
  • Night Shift Differential: 15%
  • Weekend Shift Differential: $2.00 per hour.
  • Charge Nurse Premium Pay: $1.00 per hour.
  • Float Nurse Premium Pay: $2.50 per hour.
  • Standby Premium Pay: ¼ of regular hourly wage or Federal minimum wage (whichever is greater).
  • Health Care Plan: Per Diem employees may purchase the Ventura County Health Care Plan (VCHCP) at their own expense.
Agency & Department

Health Care Agency – Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital. Registered Nurse II and Per Diem Registered Nurse II are represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) and are eligible for overtime compensation. Salary placement is determined according to the current CNA memorandum of agreement. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed‑term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only.

Example Duties
  • Uses the full scope of the Nurse Practice Act to assess, plan, organize, and provide nursing care to assigned patients.
  • Follows prescribed doctors' orders concerning treatments and medications.
  • Documents patient treatment and dispensing; makes patient observations; records and reports on all pertinent information, including changes in patient condition and general progress.
  • Provides follow-through on judgment within the scope of accepted nursing practice.
  • Assists doctors in examination and treatment.
  • Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift.
  • Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of new and ancillary personnel.
  • Maintains current knowledge of nursing care developments and therapeutic measures; attends department in‑services and staff development programs.
  • May participate in quality assurance/utilization review or other non‑direct patient care nursing assignments.
  • May interpret and monitor cardiac rhythms depending on area of assignment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Minimum six (6) months of recent acute care nursing experience in an acute hospital setting or completion of the Ventura County Medical Center competency requirements.
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California or valid RN licensure in another state with California licensure pending.
  • Six (6) months of full‑time professional registered nursing experience in at least one of the following specialties: DOU/IMC/Step‑Down Unit, Emergency Department, Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Medical‑Surgical, Operating Room, Peri‑Operative Services, Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit, Post‑Operative Services, Telemetry.
  • Current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by the first day of employment and maintained thereafter.
  • Current, valid Advanced Life Support (ACLS) certification by the first day of employment and maintained thereafter.
  • Successful completion of the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment.
