Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provides appropriate nursing interventions in stable and emergent patient situations. Competent in routine nursing skills including medication administration, IV therapy, care of indwelling catheters & drains, and medical equipment use; follows chain of command.
  • Interprets ECG rhythms and manages life-threatening emergencies; coordinates with Monitor Technician.
  • Manages care for patients requiring ICP/ventriculostomy monitoring and PA/arterial pressure monitoring.
  • Provides care for patients needing mechanical ventilation or ventilatory support devices; plans and implements multidisciplinary care plans.
  • Educates patients and families; documents care and evaluates patient response; performs unit safety and quality checks.

Job Summary

Responsible for the planning, coordination, and provision of nursing care to patients on the critical care setting. Supervises and delegates care responsibilities to ancillary personnel commensurate with their scope of practice. Responsible for critical care nursing knowledge and skills applicable to but not limited to the care of patients with multi system failure requiring ventilation, neuro / trauma, respiratory failure, and hemodynamic monitoring. This position is represented by CNA.

Job Requirements

Education and Work Experience:

  • High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required
  • Associate Degree(A.A. or A.S.): Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing: Preferred
  • Passing completion of a Critical Care Nursing course: Required
  • Six months previous critical care experience: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications
  • Current RN license in state of practice: Required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy: Required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy: Required
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC): Required within 1 year of hire or transfer into the department.(Current employees as of 06.30.2021 have 2 years to complete)
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in state of practice: Required
Facility Specific License/Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy: Required
  • AHA-ACLS or ARC-ALS: Required
Essential Functions
  • Provides appropriate nursing interventions in stable and emergent patient situations. Is competent in all routine nursing skills including: (1) medication administration, (2) intravenous therapy including blood products, (3) care & maintenance of indwelling catheters & drains and, (4) safe use of any medical equipment used in the critical care setting, (5) Understands and follows chain of command per policy.
  • Accurately interprets ECG rhythm and manages care of patients during life threatening emergencies in populations served. Verifies alarm settings with Monitor Technician according to policy. Demonstrates knowledge of lead functions and application, able to make recommendations for best monitoring based on patient presentation.
  • Demonstrates knowledge/skill regarding the care and management of patients requiring ICP and ventriculostomy monitoring. Is proficient in assessment and intervention in changes in neurological symptoms. Demonstrates knowledge/skill regarding the care and management of patients requiring Pulmonary Artery Monitoring Catheters and patients requiring Arterial Pressure Monitoring Catheters.
  • Demonstrates knowledge/skill regarding the care and management of patients requiring mechanical ventilation and other ventilatory support devises I.e. C-pap mask; Nasal bi-pap mask; High Flow O2 mask. Demonstrates knowledge regarding the principles of multisystem alteration and its impact on physiological functions, developmental tasks and alteration in mental processing of the adult and elder population. Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan.
  • Educates patients and/or their families regarding care. Uses teaching methods appropriate to the age, condition, culture, and assessed learning-readiness of the patient. Completes legible, accurate and timely documentation of all nursing care provided, including evaluation of patient’s response to medications, treatments & procedures. Consistently performs necessary unit specific safety & quality control checks (i.e. Shift and 24hr MD order checks, VO/TO Read Back, crash cart checks, urine QC, refrig logs & outdate checks).
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
