Overview

RN I - Direct Care position at Abilene State Supported Living Center, Abilene, TX. The role supports morning, evening, and night shifts on multiple homes. The Direct Care RN I may supervise Direct Care LVN staff in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act. The nurse provides professional nursing care to residents under the supervision of the Nurse Manager.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
  • Attend work on a regular basis and follow assigned shift schedules, including rotating schedules, extended shifts, and/or overtime as needed.
  • Administer medications, immunizations, and treatments; observe residents for unusual symptoms and reactions.
  • Conduct physical assessments of health needs and implement appropriate actions.
  • Implement and monitor case management service plans.
  • Instruct and assist residents in meeting their health care needs.
  • Prepare, maintain, and review individual records and assessments.
  • Participate in quality assurance reviews as needed.
  • Comply with all applicable standards, facility policies, and the Texas Nursing Practice Act.
  • Manage medical records (paper or electronic) and provide treatment to employees injured in the course of employment.
  • Other duties as assigned, including support for disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
Qualifications
  • Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Texas (or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact). A temporary permit to perform duties under supervision may be acceptable.
  • Graduation from an ACEN or CCNE accredited 4-year or 2-year nursing program is required.
  • Prior employment experience as a RN or LVN is preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures and emergency equipment; ability to perform CPR as required.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures, health care laws and regulations, medical diagnoses and treatments, and community health and nursing care principles.
  • Ability to provide individual care, maintain records, explain public health law, and communicate effectively.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills; ability to coordinate with a team and PCPs.
Licensure And Certifications
  • Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in Texas (or reciprocity under NLC). Temporary permit may be issued for duties under supervision.
Additional Information

Applicants must pass background checks, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks as required. All state employees are subject to random drug testing. Flexibility in work hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays may be required. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. HHSC uses E-Verify and requires I-9 documentation on first day of work.
