Job Description: RN - FT/Outpatient Surgery Center
Location: Fort Myers, FL

Job Summary:

All staff RN’s for the facility will be cross-trained in all areas of the operating room: Pre-OP, PACU, and the Operating Room (RN Circulator). Cross training will ensure that any RN in the facility will be familiar with each area of the operating room and be ready to work in a specific area as needed.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
PROCEDURE: PRE-OP
  • Check all charts (doctor’s orders) for the surgery day.
  • Check surgery schedule for surgery add-ons or cancellations.
  • Check all equipment including autoclave, glucometer, 02 tanks, and suction.
  • Check Crash-Cart: all medications in appropriate place and stocked. Defibrillator and monitor tested and noted in log.
  • Count narcotics and document.
  • Greet patients.
  • Check patient’s name, wrist band and chart.
  • Orientate/familiarize the patient with the surroundings.
  • Recheck charts to ensure all operative consents are signed and witnessed.
  • Take vitals.
  • Give detailed explanation of pre-op, surgical and immediate post-op care to alleviate patient/family apprehensions.
RN CIRCULATOR
  • Assist with preparation of operating room.
  • Assist with surgical procedures, including all equipment in the operating room (i.e., ORA, smoke evacuator, etc.).
  • Monitor patient during surgery.
  • Ensure safety measures are carried out by entire OR Team (i.e., time outs, infection control).
  • Document all pertinent information in patient EMR, reporting all information to all team members, including the Surgeon and Anesthetist.
POST-OP
  • Receive patient and reports from circulating nurse.
  • Assess patient’s airway; take vitals and record all information. Observe for any signs of post-op/anesthetic adverse reactions.
  • Administer post-op medications if ordered.
  • Assess patient’s condition; notify surgeon or nurse if patient’s condition changes. If complications occur nurse will take appropriate actions as ordered by surgeon or nurse anesthetist.
  • Record all care/assessment of patient on PACU sheet.
  • Provide supportive reassurance as patient awakens throughout the day.
  • Follow post-op orders requested from each surgeon.
  • Provide detailed post-op instructions to patient and family regarding care at home.
Infection Control:
  • Wear appropriate attire according to facility policy.
  • Follow universal precautions (i.e., handwashing).
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) according to policy and need.
  • Practice recognized principles of cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Correctly dispose of sharps.
  • Correctly handle hazardous and contaminated materials.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • All charting and nurse’s observations should be recorded during the day, as soon as they occur.
  • Make post-op phone calls as needed or directed.
  • All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must hold a current/active RN license and be registered in the State of Florida.
  • Must have at least 1-year RN experience.
  • Must have current BLS/CPR card.
  • Must be able to comply with the CMS-COVID Vaccine Mandate.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proper skills in inserting and discontinuing IV catheters.
  • Demonstrated skill in critical thinking and in written communication.
  • Must be able to apply basic math and algebra to calculate dosages and amounts of medications.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to assist patients on/off stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Transport patients to and from operating room.
  • The use of kindness, empathy, and patience when working with colleagues and patients.
  • Attention to detail; ensuring accuracy in work.
  • Ability to multi-task and ensure deadlines are met consistently.
  • Ability to work as a team member, collaboratively and positively.
