Oro Valley Hospital is seeking a Surgical First Assistant to support surgeons before, during, and after procedures. The role includes scrubbing and circulating duties within a six-orchestra OR environment that emphasizes teamwork and patient safety.

Candidates must complete an Accredited Surgical First Assistant program and hold applicable certifications (RNFA/CFA/CSA) with BLS and CNOR where required. Prior OR experience is essential, with preference for First Assistant experience and Arizona

Qualifications

• Completed Accredited Surgical First Assistant program (RNFA, CFA or CSA) and certification.
• Two years OR experience as Surgical Tech or RN.
• One year First Assistant experience preferred.
• BLS, CNOR and current RN license or equivalent credentialing.

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparing rooms with instruments, sutures, and equipment.
• Open sterile supplies and maintain sterile technique.
• Position, prep, and drape patients for surgical procedures.
• Assist the surgical team during operations and anticipate surgeon needs.
• Retract tissue, expose the operative field, maintain homeostasis, and assist in closures.

What you’ll do

At Oro Valley Hospital you’ll play a vital role in providing quality care to our patients before, during, and after surgery.

Oro Valley Hospital has 6 ORs and is an all private-room acute‑care hospital where technology and skilled professionals come together to provide compassionate, customer‑focused care. Our key services include a robust orthopedics program using the da Vinci robot – minimally invasive and robotic assisted joint replacement surgery – and minimally invasive and robotic assisted general surgery, gastroenterology, and many others.

Position Purpose

The Surgical First Assist functions as a First Assistant or as an additional assistant to the surgeon, within scope of practice. Provides scrub and/or circulating nurse services during surgical procedures and assists the surgical team, as needed, in any other capacity.

Some of the duties of a surgical first assist include:

• Assists in preparing rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment.
• Assists with opening of sterile supplies.
• Assists in moving, positioning, prepping, and draping patients for surgical procedures.
• Assists the surgical team during operative procedures, anticipating needs of surgeon.
• Functions as assistant to the surgeon, retracting tissue and exposing the operating field, providing homeostasis during surgical procedures, and assisting in closure of incisions.

Position Qualifications / Minimum Requirements

Education Required: Successful completion of an Accredited Surgical First Assistant (RNFA, CFA, or CSA) program (in addition to “Certification” – see below).

Experience:

• Two (2) years OR experience as Surgical Tech or RN required.
• One (1) year First Assistant experience strongly preferred.

Licenses / Certifications:

• For CSA or CFA: current certification and BLS required.
• For RNFA: unrestricted Arizona RN license, CNOR certification.
• BLS, Basic Cardiac Life Support, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (American Heart Association or American Red Cross) required.
• CRNFA to be completed within 9 months of employment.
• Must also provide documentation of 100 cases as a First Assistant in the past 2 years for credentialing process through Medical Staff Services department.
