Job summary

Sierra Medical Center is seeking a Registered Nurse – First Assistant for a per‑diem opportunity. The RN will support the surgical team in the operating room and related settings, performing tasks beyond standard nursing scope with RNFA education and training.

This role works with the surgeon on intra‑operative and post‑operative tasks, in compliance with state laws. The Certified RNFA does not simultaneously serve as the scrub nurse; current CNOR and related certifications are required for

Qualifications

• Current Nevada license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
• CNOR certification required for RNFA role.
• CRNFA or RNAS‑C; maintain currency with CNOR and credentialed status.
• Grandfather clause available if bachelor’s degree not held, with current CNOR and CRNFA/RNAS‑C.
• American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS (if obstetrics) as applicable.

Responsibilities

• Assist surgeon in the operating room in a first‑assistant role.
• Help with room setup and teardown to facilitate patient flow.
• Maintain hemostasis with appropriate instruments and techniques under supervision.
• Administer post‑operative local anesthetic injections as directed.
• Provide intra‑operative support and technical functions under surgeon guidance.

Job Overview

Sierra Medical Center is part of Northern Nevada Health System, a regional multi‑facility system that has excelled at offering quality care to residents of the greater Truckee Meadows. Sierra Medical Center is a 170‑bed acute care hospital offering services including 24/7 ER care, cardiology, oncology, labor and delivery, level II NICU, surgical and orthopedic services, and more.

We are seeking a Registered Nurse – First Assistant for a per‑diem opportunity. The RN will provide the surgical team with assistance within the operating room and other similar settings, performing tasks that are beyond the scope of practice for registered nurses without RNFA education and training. The RN works interdependently with the surgeon, assisting with intra‑operative procedures and post‑operative tasks while complying with state laws and nursing practice acts. The Certified RNFA does not concurrently function as the scrub nurse.

Responsibilities

• Perform first assisting role interdependently with the surgeon.
• Assist with room set‑up and tear down to facilitate patient flow.
• Maintain hemostasis by direct pressure, appropriate surgical instrument use, placement of ties, suture ligatures, chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures under the surgeon’s direct supervision.
• Perform immediate post‑operative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic agent or cocktail before dressing application.
• Provide hemostasis and other intra‑operative technical functions that assist the physician in performing a safe operation, including local infiltration or topical application of a local anesthetic at the operative site.

Qualifications

• Current Nevada license
• Current OR certification (CNOR) from the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN)
• CRNFA or RNAS‑C; must maintain currency with both CNOR and CRNFA or RNAS‑C certifications for employment
• Eligible for a grandfather clause if currently employed without a bachelor’s degree, provided currency with both CNOR and RNAS‑C certification
• Current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS (if applicable)
• NRP if working in obstetrical areas
