Overview
The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a perioperative registered nurse who works in collaboration with the surgeon and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes, in addition to the normal scope of the registered nurse.
Responsibilities
- Intraoperatively practices at the direction of the surgeon.
- Uses instruments and medical devices to provide surgical site exposure, handle and cut tissue, provide hemostasis, suturing, and wound management.
- Performs focused preoperative nursing assessments.
- Provides postoperative patient management in collaboration with other health care providers in the immediate postoperative period and beyond.
- Participates in postoperative rounds.
- Assists with patient discharge planning.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
Experience
- Three years' operating room nursing practice required.
Licensure/Certification
- Valid Kentucky Board of Nursing license required.
- Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) required.
- Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) required.
