Northside Hospital - Registered Professional Nurse Role

The Registered Professional Nurse at Northside Hospital independently plans and provides professional nursing care to patients in accordance with physician orders, established guidelines, and the scope of practice as defined by the Georgia Nurse Practice Act. The scope of practice of the registered nurse is guided by the ANA's Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 3rd Edition (2015), which defines nursing as the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through diagnosis and treatment, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.

At Northside Hospital, the practice of professional nursing incorporates ANA's standards, along with additional clinical practice components, categorized into five domains:

  1. Clinical Knowledge and Practice: Assessment, Diagnosis, Outcomes Identification, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation; Clinical Information Systems; Patient Care Technology.
  2. Professional Practice: Communication, Culturally Congruent Practice, Ethics, Resource Utilization.
  3. Leadership: Collaboration, Community Involvement, Environmental Health.
  4. Professional Development: Education, Knowledge Expansion, Practice Advancement, Contribution to the Profession.
  5. Evidence-Based Practice, Quality, and Research: Research, Quality Improvement, Patient Satisfaction, External Reporting.

The Staff Registered Professional Nurse III (Staff RN III) must be licensed in Georgia, in good standing, with at least two years of full-time nursing experience, and hold a BSN, AD, or Nursing Diploma. The role involves managing care for an assigned group of patients, aligning with the Northside Nursing Collaborative Care Model, and reflecting values of collaboration, communication, and empowerment.

Employment levels range from Staff RN I to Staff RN VI, with each level encompassing the knowledge, skills, and competencies of the previous levels. The specific responsibilities for Staff RN III include all provisions of lower levels, plus additional requirements.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Licensed as an RN in Georgia, in good standing
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two or more years of RN experience
  • BSN degree
  • Additional certifications (ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc.) or clinical specialties
  • Visual color acuity as required by specific units
