Report to the Director, the staff RN is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care to those patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment/instrumentation, and other healthcare team members. If assigned as charge nurse, will serve as a resource for coordination of activities on the unit. Responsibilities as charge include, but are not limited to, assessment of unit needs, available resources for current and upcoming shifts based on patient acuity, volume, individuals and family needs, and special clinical procedures or interventions pending.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs plan of care intervention, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, and other medical care treatments.
  • Documents patient care given.
  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to the care team, physician, patient, and family.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
  • Collaborates across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including transfer, discharge, referral, and psychosocial support.
  • Evaluates learning needs of patients and/or families and provides education appropriate to age, culture, and condition.
  • Acts as an advocate for the patient's physical and emotional well-being.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of the nursing process.
  • Plans and implements patient care and teaching based on assessments and patient age.
  • Develops individualized care plans reflecting collaboration with healthcare team, patient, and family.
  • Evaluates and documents patient responses, monitors changes, and takes appropriate actions.
  • Participates in quality improvement processes.
  • Supports a supportive environment for quality patient care, adhering to best practices and resource management.
  • Practices excellent customer service in relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Protects patient confidentiality and advocates for patient rights.
  • Formulates and evaluates educational plans for patients and families.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development through education and literature.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education: Must possess a current and active Registered Nurse License in Tennessee.

Required Skills: Critical thinking, decisive judgment, ability to work independently, and stress management skills.

Certifications: BLS, ACLS, and PALS (to be completed within 30 days of orientation).

Licenses: Current RN license in Tennessee.
