The Emergency Department (ED) at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut is part of the Yale New Haven Health System. It is a private, not-for-profit acute care, community-teaching hospital with a 45-bed ED that handles approximately 92,000 visits annually using an innovative vertical flow model. Our ED is a state-designated Level II Trauma Center, Connecticut's only Burn Center, and an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. We are also recognized as a Heart and Vascular Center and the first Accredited Geriatric Emergency Department in Connecticut.
The ED includes dedicated units such as a 7-bed Children’s Emergency Department staffed with specialized personnel, and a newly remodeled 10-bed Behavioral Health Unit designed for emergency psychiatric care, staffed by psychiatric physicians, advanced practice providers, and psychiatric nurses.
Our ED staff comprises registered nurses trained in Emergency Nursing, experienced nurses from various specialties, and new graduates participating in a comprehensive nurse residency program. Support staff, including ED technicians, play vital roles in patient care and experience. The department collaborates closely with Yale University emergency medicine residents and hosts nursing, medical, and advanced practice students from local universities.
We pride ourselves on delivering patient-centered, collaborative care, emphasizing high-quality, timely treatment, and nursing professional governance, always centered around the patient and family.
